The Observer picked its all-time greats team yesterday (haven't seen this mentioned anywhere) and had Steve Gerrard in its midfield.

They justified the choice by saying that someone had to do the donkey work for a midfield of Maradona, Cruyff and Zidane but I reckon that if lot got the ball, there wouldn't be much possession lost.

Considering that the likes of Di Stefano, Garrincha, Puskas, Zico, Best, Charles, Netzer, Gento and Charlton couldn't get in the team, Gerrard looks like an odd choice.

The team is also heavily dominated by modern players. Only one played most of his career before 1970 and eight have played in the last 20 years - I know players are fitter and faster now but I can't believe that they're that much more skilful.

Plenty of Liverpool fans (and misguided England fans) voting on the poll, shirley?

But there are even more Man U fans around - yet only one of their players made the team. And if you want a Liverpool player to do the dirty work in midfield, I'd say that Souness was a far better player than Gerrard.

It does seem like an oddball choice

That would be like Graham Barrett or Robbie Savage being listed as one of the all time Albion greats.

He's hardly what you'd describe as a sacrificing midfielder - if they wanted somebody to do the donkey work, they'd have been better off with Deschamps or Makelele.

Has nowhere near the positional discipline to do that.

or Essien, or Hargreaves, or Mascherano, or Alonso, or Gattuso, or anyone else actually suited.

Alan Navarro would be better than Gerrard, if they insisted on crow-barring a scouser into the team.

Just ridiculous. Is it any wonder these players stroll into a World Cup thinking they only have to show up, when our media go around telling them they are so much better than they actually are.

If you picking an all-time England team would Gerrard get in it? I know these things are subjective but that's one of the maddest picks I've ever seen

He's not even Liverpools best central midfielder of the last ten years

Picking an 'All-time best' team is pretty much impossible to do anyway - how can you possibly compare today's players with those of fifty years - or more - ago? The game is so different now; it'd be hard enough picking a world's best team now, from present day players - but to mix them up from all eras of the game? Nah.........
