Interesting thread, how do the non gamblers feel about the financial services system which is essentially managed gambling, notwithstanding those who manage their own portfolios directly?

I can only imagine those who had shares in (say) Bradford and Bingley feel the same as a gambler who lost their money?

Principle is the same, no?

Like all vices, if you're able to control yourself when partaking then it's there to be enjoyed if you so choose.

I'll happily admit that I'll put bets on fairly regularly but it's always small amounts and never anything that I couldn't afford to lose in the first place.

What does annoy me is the way that tv adverts (especially Ladbrokes) for it are bloody everywhere and clearly try to make it seem so much more than it is. If your entire group of friends is based on a shared love of gambling (Ladbrokes again), to the point that it's the key social activity, you've got a problem.

If it wasn't for gambling we may not have got The Amex.
Worst still we may not even exist or we would have been playing Whitehawk at The Withdean this weekend.
Thank you gamblers.

Ive played roulette a couple of times on holiday. I have a maths and stats degree and probability and expectation played a significant part in my studies. I approached roulette from this angle and more for amusement and practical interest than money making. In general gambling is generally not for me.

I am not a gambler by any means, but I do like to put a few quid on the horses when we go to Goodwood, once or twice a year. Nearly always lose.
Don't buy Lottery tickets or anything else.
'Tis a bit concerning when you see some of the amounts people spend on lottery tickets and the like in the newsagents and supermarkets. Many of them don't look like they've got that much to spare.
Had a good mate many years ago, who had a bit of a habit. It put me off gambling hearing him say ' just done my bollocks' rather more often than he said 'weighed in'!

Never really been into gambling but i hate how it seems to have taken over every sporting event on the planet. Too many ads luring people into gambling and it is too easy to do it.

Judging by the number of adverts for online bingo, there most be an awful lot of people playing it. Not sure who though? The adverts generally seem aimed at women.

Don't the attraction and very, very few people come out on top in the long run. I can see the fun in the odd flutter but gawping at a fake roulette wheel on your iPad or even worse, spending hours down the bookies.
Fruit machines in pubs are inherantly depressing.

It holds no attraction for me, i have never gambled to the point i have never even bought a lottery ticket.
I'm fed up with the intrusive advertising for gambling site on the internet to the point i sometime think is it just me who does not gamble.
When younger and times were harder i thought i was just too tight to gamble and now later in life and now more comfortable its no longer an issue but i just don't see the buzz or excitement of gambling.

They want you to think exactly that. That you are the only one missing out. In fact, only mugs do it regularly.

I am truly sick of the gambling adverts on Sky Sports channels. They seem to advertise nothing else.

Agree. I always mute the ads on TV anyway, but they're still awful. And of course they try to tell you that gambling is fun. No it's not. It's a mugs game. There's only one winner and it's not the gambler.

The only time I've gambled is on a handful of visits to Las Vegas where I've given myself a float of $20 to play the slot machines and if I accumulate $30 I'll walk away. Even that's not fun any longer since they stopped paying out quarters.

I wish I had time to talk about my gambling experiences.

I'll do that tonight with some helpful tips and useful info hopefully. :)

Thankfully they never went ahead with the super casinos, the ones that lose tend to be the ones that can't afford it....

Shirley roulette is pretty much the only form of gambling that has no basis in statistics and probability.

Isn't it purely statistics and probability that make it work... or have you got a foolproof no-risk moneymaking system that beats the odds everytime?

I'm already out of my depth!

I was meaning statistics and probability won't allow you to predict the outcome, it being purely random.

But as said I'm already slowly backing out of this door, I think my phone is ringing

Apparantly fruit machine takings in pubs are way down as the punters now play the FOBT's in bookies for bigger prizes

You can start 'matched betting' as apparantly it's not gambling

Matched betting is gambling, but at odds that are heavily stacked in the punter's favour at the expense of the bookie. There are however two issues with this:
1) Once the bookies get a sniff that you're attempting to extract the value from their offers (which are designed purely to get you gambling regularly), they'll ban you.
2) Matched betting can lead to a false sense of security. It is easy to then find yourself taking risks you shouldn't be taking and actually properly gambling.

As much as FOBTs are clearly a mug's game, what I want to know is what sort of clown sees the appeal of betting on those virtual horse races you see going on in shops at 9 in the morning? Seriously, WTF?
