Because I have had to cancel Sky after a couple of years with it, I am now reliant on just the Freeview programmes. I went to their website just to check what channels were available and two of them Yesterday and Dave are listed as freeview but when i go to either it says that they are available only for a subscription...anyone any ideas on this,

Yesterday & Dave should be available without Subscription. Where are you?
Stick your postcode in here to see if you should be recieving it. Digital UK - Postcode checker

Do you mean freeview or the free channels you can still get with your sky equipment. Just because you have cancelled sky, your equipment will still work, just with a reduced line up. Also the channels you want may only be in their freesat line up. In which case you will need to buy a freesat card from sky which I think cost £25.00. You will get far more channels through satelite than you will through freeview.

separate question, but is sky sports news now only for subscription with sky? I have sky, but one friend says he still gets it and the other says he doesn't

You may have something there, You cannot get Dave or Yesterday free via Satellite, only through Aerial.

Yes it's subscription but I believe you have to subscribe to the news package. i.e It's possible to have all the sports channels but still not have SSN.

It has been for about a month, tune to 301 as you get Final Score most Saturdays before it goes onto BBC 1.

You can have standalone Sky Sports News in the News Pack as you say, but if you have the full sports pack it's included in that without having to have the news pack as well.

SSN should now be free with ANY Sky packs. My mum has neither the news pack or sports but SSN has become available since it left Freeview. It wasn't available to her whilst it was on Freeview.

i've just been looking up the exact same issue. freeview and freesat are not quite the same thing. apparently some of the freeview channels are not available through freesat as they are included in pay for Sky bundles. so if Dave is being paid by Sky, its not going to be available for free.

i dont know if they will become available on freesat, i reckon they might be tied in to contracts that once ended will mean they go to freesat instead.
