Footballers who smoke

Football fans pay their wages? Big laughs. I think Arsenal pay their wages, largely funded by their Russian owner and Sky

Partly then, considering Arsenal get 60k a week at about £60 a pop, it's big bucks.

Brighton / Hove actually
I'm entitled to a private life. But if I do something that affects my company at the weekend I don't expect to keep my job.

Footballers are athletes, it's their job. If they get fat, smoke and generally don't look after themselves they should be in breach of contract.

This is true, the club puts a lot of investment into the players to keep them fit and anything contrary to that should be a breach of contract, or at least be paid half the rate for a non smoking footballer.

That is true but if you were paying a player say 100k a week at the top level of the game, would you be happy that he was potentially harming his health and his fitness? I think in this day an age when footballers know the risks and effects of smoking on fitness and other aspects that could affect performance surely it's very unprofessional for a professional athlete to smoke? I don't have an issue in general with smoking(apart from feeling like you're walking through a smoke storm when leaving the Amex:lolol: ) just think if it was me paying them 100 k a week as a top level athlete I'd be extremely pissed off

Correct, it is ridiculous to be a footballer and smoke when your time at the top is limited and your game relies on running and sprinting. Every little bit of "edge" is required to play at a high level.

However, myself and Mrs V went on a boating holiday in the summer with clever, articulate and intelligent people who were discussing their future work projects and career aims but were smoking like absolute chimneys. Twas hilarious how some of them said they were going to "empower " their lives by taking control of their destiny, the sky's the limit etc etc... but could not see that despite these huge ambitions, they were unable to shake off the desire for a fag, which would have been a damn sight more empowering.

So, it's not just footballers who are thick.

Football greats such as Peter O'Sullivan and Joe Cole enjoyed a gasper - it encourages midfield creativity.
So what.

Wayne Rooney was pictured having a ciggy a couple of years ago in the summer.

I don't think there is a problem with smoking in the game. Cocaine? Yes. I reckon there's a recreational user at nearly every professional club in the country. What do footballers get up to in the top nightclubs in the country, chatting up beautiful girls? Leon Knight said drugs were a problem in the sport on Cutting Edge.

Quite. This must be from the John Terry book of humour.

I rank my post alongside "he's great in training" and "he puts himself about, defenders know when he is on the pitch" as euphemisms for "he's crap"

Socrates.

Brazillian from the 80s, I think he may have been their captain.

Smoked, and was a doctor.

Socrates was an amazing player and yes he smoked and became a doctor.
