I don't think I've ever found porn by accident, and I've been on-line for nearly 17 years. I shall certainly be opting in, but surely it would be difficult (1) to agree a definition of "porn", (2) to accurately index which web sites/pages meet that definition (and which don't).

Same here buddy.... There is some truth in the O/P which causes me some concern

I have no truck with the the pervs who use the net for sex, but I hope that it will stop there. NB I also hope that any auto search filter is better than the one we used to have at work . It used to report any news article with words like porn in it..or an address like MiddleSEX !

you really havent been using the internet very hard then... though seriously you're right in respect to the sort of uberhardcore/illegal stuff the focus of this. the problem is that (1) is is difficult to agree a definition. (2) is already in place for the illegal and applied by the major search engines and ISPs. so this current policy adresses one issue that is already being looked at (child/illegal image) while making a complete hash of another issue that will be better served by education of parents and children alike.

lol. I do plenty of surfing, but I'm careful where I go and what links I click on. If I'm looking for porn, I know it's easy to find. Even then, I would stick to sites I "trust".

(1) I think most of us could agree what "definitely is porn" and "definitely isn't porn", but there's a huge grey area in between.
(2) It's easy for new sites to appear that won't be on any blacklists, and just as easy to move nor remove them. It's a moving target, and not a full solution.

I agree that education is the best policy, which I guess applies to most of life's dangers.

Will the Tories also ban people from thinking non-consensual thoughts while they jerk off while watching Rachel Riley on Countdown? How will they regulate this?

NSC would go into meltdown if it happened!

Once the technology is in place, it'd be a short step to regulating political thought...

Rachel has already been ordered to change here attire due to alleged complaints .
How long before she has to appear in a hijab

but this is exactly what is being proposed. there isnt a magic wand Google or anyone else can wave to know that a new website is going to have illegal porn, it has to be reported as such. otherwise its regular porn. in which case you'll have to opt in to be able watch it. meanwhile the kids will bypass that opt in using a VPN tunnel their mate showed them how to set up. (as apposed to the current best practice where the ISP provides client side firewall restrictions which Johnny cant bypass. well, not without hacking your account to change settings...)

As heinous as the crimes 'linked' with extreme porn are, surely this is the proverbial sledgehammer to crack a nut? There is no evidence that these crimes are any more prevalent per capita than they were, pre or post internet. In fact, what evidence there is suggests we are a less violent and 'perverse' society than ever. So, unless there is an alternative agenda, other than a populist vote-winner (a-la the health & safety reforms), I just don't get it.
