Its double standards Bully. No-one would get banned for joking about the McCanns young child. Actually I dont think they should but the odd joke about different cultures or races is very much frowned upon on here and could well meet with a ban.

I'm not looking for people to get banned and i'm not trying to justify my own ban either, but if mods are going to set moral standards then I dont see how they can defend one type of sick humour as people dont really mean it and then condemn any person who posts a racist joke as a racist bigot.

1. Show me my 'jokes' about the McCann situation. There are none.

2. Please feel free to post jokes about ignorant racists [as opposed to ignorant racist jokes].

3. You can forget borrowing that lawnmower.

You have a memory like an elephant you do Hansy. What about the strimmer then.

I think there is a clear difference behind the jokes, one is ideologically ignorant and hateful the other is insensitive and in poor taste. However McCann or Racist jokes that show the stupidity of the media or racists (respectively) in an ironic fashion are fine by me.

Thing is the jokes are usually in extremely poor taste, so I can ignore them and it gives me an idea of the mentality of the person who find them funny. But what is getting really boring is how there are a few users on here who leap into the "I got banned for less than that" and "this smacks of double standards" etc. etc., its all getting very boring...

I fully agree but at least the jokes have stopped now so let them argue away like little children as to who got banned for the worst reason.

The whole McCann thing is fuelled by the McCanns themselves IMO. Normally child disappearances are not treated as a subject for jokes, although tragic events often do inspire black humour (Princess Di, Hillsbourough, Kings Cross fire etc. etc.) and yes, I have laughed, through my groans, at them all.

The parents here have created such a sense of surrelism with their press conferences, photo opportunities, media and public relations events.

This does not feel to me like the human tragedy that it is, more like some sort of soap opera starring Jerry and Skeletor

That's the problem though isn't it, at the heart of it is a missing girl.

Funny thing is - I view it differently. The McCanns have been hounded by the global press every time they step out of their house. Yes they could have simply walked past and not made comment - but they believe that every time they do make comment that this keeps Maddeline in the limelight so to speak. It seems they are damned if they do and damned if they don't at the moment.

Agreed Les, I think the whole PR thing has diluted that to the point where people are talking about the parents and their antics rather than Madeliene.

I do agree with TB that although this has backfired on them, they were not exactly spoilt for choice in how they managed the press.

Really? One thread with a couple of posts is the REALLY boring part, rather than countless f***ing threads speculating about the McCanns?

Any good jokes about 11 year olds getting shot in the head on Merseyside?

Try and keep them short, I need to text them and my thumb hurts if I do it for too long.

"In total, 31 children and babies, 20 from Britain, had to be rescued by officers following the raid on Cox's parents' home. He arranged the live abuse of youngsters at pre-designated times as people might gather to watch a televised football match. Why, some asked amid the outrage that followed his arrest, had we not heard of these missing souls? The truth is these children were never missing. The babies and children ritually abused via web-cam were rescued from their own homes."

Blimey - this all got stirred up a bit, didn't it?

Firstly - I'd like to apologise if anyone did take offence, as none was intended. The 'joke' was really so crap and poorly worded that I really didn't think it stretched the line of decency at all. That's not the point, of course - so sorry.

I don't think anyone really needs to pass comment on their thoughts for the 4 year old little girl at the centre of this. Like everyone I'm sure whether a parent or not (I have a pretty, blonde, 4 year old often referred to as Maddy too), I feel desperately for Madeleine McCann's well being.

My opening post was meant to spark the debate as to how unusually late it seems to be, for this high profile tragedy, that such 'jokes' begin to circulate.

As for moderation on NSC - as ever, a lot is driven by member complaints. If a post generates a complaint or two it is likely to be close to the mark, warranting a closer look. However, we do often stumble upon things ourselves and act accordingly as required. We're all different and, as such, will have differing opinions as to the suitability of any particular 'punishment' but if any moderator does get it wrong, punishments can be adjusted or withdrawn completely. Moderation is a bit of a thankless task and people can only do what they feel right at the time.

Thats a fair response Bozza. My complaint was'nt so much against any one joke in particular ( they were all rubbish anyway ) more the principle of how one type of sick humour can be condemned with great force whilst people can look to defend another type of sick humour with reasons of "well nobody really means it anyway" thats where I saw double standards. Having said that i'm sure if the thread had been started by somebody other than yourself or another mod then it would've been met with a touch more condemnation than just a few of us. Anyway it's time to climb down from this moral high ground now because it's starting to give me virtigo and I shall be getting a nosebleed before long.
