I draw the line at sending greetings card for Firework Night!!!!

If you're party to certain religions (which I'm not) then there are obvious reasons to celebrate Christmas. If you are not, it's a good excuse to get together with your extended family, get merry, have office parties, watch some classic films, be generous! Valentines day is good if you're with someone you love, not so good if you're not! New Years day, out with the old and in with the new. Optimism which is invarialbly unfounded but again, a good reason to get merry and enjoy the company of your friends. Unfortunately, a bi-product of their popularity is of course the regrettable commercialisation of them but, from my perspective, that is a small price to pay.

Of course, all the above doesn't mean you can't enjoy other times of the year but the collective nature of those events can, to some, make them more enjoyable. Compare it to Brighton scoring a goal. Do you enjoy it more because almost everyone is celebrating or do you think it would be equally enjoyable if only you and couple of mates with you were the only ones jumping up and down????

Good answer :lolol:

They last a few seconds, scare the shit out of pets and cost *******s loads of money.

And there you have answered your own question. People make a shed load of cash out of them. Years ago it was all centred around one week of the year, inclusive of the two Saturday's nearest the 5th. Now around here they have had displays as early as the 28th of October and I know of one planned for the last Saturday in November. Worlds gone crazy.

Guy Fawkes blowing up of the government was thwarted in 1605 and we've been celebrating this for over 400 years on 5 November.
IRA were successful in killing 5 in 1984 at The Grand - should this also be celebrated with fireworks on each 12 October?

Is it failure we celebrate or good fortune? I'm really not sure.

My view is that it is like so many festivals now; Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's day, etc. etc.
Great commercial opportunity to fleece you of some of your cash.

As a 15 year old going to lewes with a couple of bottles of wine and a bag full of explosives it was the best night of the year,as a middle aged man with a dog its a drag, like most commercial driven things they have extended it and ruined it:down:

Who's this middle aged man you speak of Rev?

Erm......you do know he gets burnt, right?
I don't want to know your idea of a celebration!

Actually he wasn't burnt. He was interrogated, tortured (confessed) and then hung, drawn and quartered.

(Guess who visited both the Tower of London and London Dungeon last week?)

I'm old enough to remember going up the woods and bringing home massive fallen boughs to make a huge fire, of sitting in it to guard it against thievery from other kids (I know !), of penny for the guy - made from a stuffed sack and limbs of stuffed old nylons from me mum and a punctured frido with a mask on, of jumping jacks, catherine wheels, "pretty" ones (boo) and bangers.Red hot roasted face and a vague idea of gunpowder plots, and knowing about Guy Fawkes who might have been Guido, but he got burned under either name. Three cheers when the guy falls into the fire, roast chestnuts, jackets, corona (no, the lemonade.)

Nearly all gone now, swamped by Halloween (bah, humbug ), and age - lots of age.

But, though the dogs dislike them, I still peer out of the window and think " It's a rocket !".

* Remembers pinching milk bottles from neighbours doorsteps for the rockets, only to be lit by Dad.We got the bloomin' sparklers.

I'm stating the obvious but the 'Guy' is burnt every year.

Sorry to be an old grump but whats the point of them ?

I always thought it was fireworks, still never mind, try going to Lewes on bonfire night one year I still find it exciting after many years, as said before it's historic and it's something the people of Lewes will never let us forget. Sussex is the centre of the country for all these celebrations and long may it continue. If you have got school age children a visit at least once is important.

Safety message for all.

Have an enjoyable celebration and remember Guy Fawkes was one of the few people who have ever entered Parliament with the most honest of intentions.

After someone I know's bone in their leg was shattered at Lewes last year by some idiot throwing a banger - I cant say I will ever go to Lewes.

Too many idiots have ruined it nowadays.
