Both Pearl Harbour and Titanic, take an event that had a great impact on society, and turns them into a pathetic love story. I have seen both movies, much to my displeasure. I would rather watch the events on the history or discovery channel and learn more about the events and, to be perfectly honest, i have been more entertained by what i have seen in documentaries about the events.

But I am a firm believer of "To each their own." However, I would never suggest either movie for anyone, unless they want a sappy love story that has next to nothing to do with the events hinted to by the title of the films.

Titanic - sentimental nonsense, it speeks volumes that it is the highest grossing film of all time. The eternally pubescant Dicaprio and the braying luvvie moose that is Winslett are forever seared on my brain.

Pearl Harbour - Historically innacurate twoddle.

If I am ever unfortunate enough to have to sit through either of those chunks of unadulterated nonsense again I will be forced to enter a film rehab centre where I will only be allowed to watch the best films from all genres and firm but fair Orderlys will wake me every morning and say

" Nibble, we know you have been watching Shawshank Redemption in your room after lights out, now up you get, the first showing of Animal House begins in ten minutes."

Titanic is a very good film 8.5
Pearly Harbor 7.2 based on technical bravado mainly

I think the trouble with your reviews if you don't mind me saying so is that because you do not like a film, many millions of other people do, you come across as a sort of higher intellecturally, higher breed of human being and look down with pity on us sad souls who find enjoyment in a film like Titanic which is the most successful film of all time by the way because hundreds of millions of people loved it or the Shawshank Redemption which again 90% of people rate very highly and you come across as though you have your head up your backside, if you don't mind me saying so.

Black Sheep

A tongue in cheek horror about Mutant Sheep in New Zealand who turn into killing machines. The premise is amusing and watched for comic value it has its moments. Its not a great work of art and like Slither I can't say I would actively want to watch it again.

Of course I don't mind yousaying so. And if you don't mind me saying your reverse snobbery is quite grating.

I enjoy many films that probably aren't high on the intelectual scale. If you note I referenced Animal House on my last post, one of my favourite films. I will do a list of some of my favourite films (the ones I remember below for you to decide If I am an intellectual snob. I just find the films I have a go at so easy to mock as tehy are so full of sentmentality. I enjoy a bit of schmaltz from time to time. I just like it served up with a modicum of watchability such as Little Miss Sunshine or Knocked Up that is all.

In no particular order, a few films I have enjoyed in the last few years

All three Indiana Jones films
Batman Begins
Planes trains and Automobiles
Narc
Memento
Hot Fuzz
Casino Royale
Box of Moonlight
Midnight Express
Animal House
Saving Private Ryan
Fight Club
And, as with anyone lots more. Can't see that they are over intellectual?

I think the the thing is you have to admit that you do like really overly sentimental films and it is just easy to have a dig is all.

I've had this argument before, but anyway.

I've watched a couple of documentaries on the events of Pearl Harbour and found them fascinating - interviews with survivors, the men who saw the events with their own two eyes and lived to tell the tale, their accounts are harrowing and utterly compelling.

But a film is a slab of entertainment. If it based on a real event, its inevitably going to take liberties with some of the facts in order to fit in with its own storyline. Its not setting out to EDUCATE, its setting out to ENTERTAIN. The same with Braveheart - Gibson took some monstrous liberties with the historical facts surrounding William Wallace, but as a film, its fantastically entertaining (unless you're sitting there poe-faced, mentally ticking off the rights and wrongs of whats being portrayed and how it really happened).

Pearl Harbour (as a film) clearly has its faults, and picking them out is a case of shooting fish in a barrel. But I still say the battle scenes are among the best ever commited to celuloid. Does that make it a great film ? No. But the last hour-and-a-bit is bloody EXCITING.

It is all a mater of taste. I understand that entertainment is the priority when making bums on seats, blockbusters. I wouldn't have it any other way. I just happen to think that it is a badly made film and I didn't enjoy it.

There are many so called art house intelectual films that I wouldn't watch or didn't enjoy but that doesn't make me a thicky anymore than not enjoying some blockbustrers or sentimental films makes me a snob.

Au Revoir Les Enfants. Brilliant beyond words. And all true too, based on the director's own experiences. 9.7

I heard great things about Memento and was dissapointed with it. I thought Nolan's Batman Begins and The Prestige were much better films.

I really enjoyed memento, thought it was very interesting idea and intrigued me all the way through. I would give it a 8.9

I thought Memento was brilliant but saw it before anyone had told me much about it, i liked the fact that it constantly challenged your assumptions. I did like The Prestige a lot but i didn't think it was interesting and it seemed a little confused

My assessment was probably influenced by the prescence of the greatest living actor , Christian Bale being in both of those films

I am Legend

This film took over $ 550 000 000 at the box office. It is a decent film but no worldbeater imo. Will smith who is a consistanly good actor was very good. the story was thin and the Zombie's pretty inpressive when they were out for fun. the depeiction of a desolate New York was very realistic. It was good but not as good as I had hoped.

7.0

I would like to see this even though Will Smith is a gurning, suspiciously camp, one trick pony.

I disagree Nibble, Smith is a very good actor imo. Do you EVER have anything positive to say about ANYTHING. It must be great to be as perfect as you. I suppose EVERYTHING you do in your life is done to perfection. Just for ONE day trying leaving your negative , critical glasses at home and try and embrace some things in a positive manner. Try and see some good in things. It may make your life better. Just a thought.
