Every genres has it's pluses and minuses eh. 12 Angry Men is one of my favourite films easily. Just to have stagework and the incredible acting of 12 unglamourous men unfurl on screen was amazing. The crime itself is pretty uninteresting. Just Henry Ford engaging us all with his doubt and ability to place that in his opponents' minds.
I like Con Air too, even if i don't like to admit it. And Teenwolf.
Psychologically you make mention of "obscure" foreign films being not your bag, when all you already know is that they are not obscure because of their calibre, but because of the monetary ruling of mainstream releases. Run Lola Run was cool. You should see El Violin that i saw the other day. Not hidden due to it's depth or zillion artistic layers that no other man could sink himself in, but that it was made in Mexico with an unEnglish tongue and hand.
It's the same as with everything: you get out what you put in. If you follow things and dare to hunt, then you'll find something special. Just as you ideally don't just accept the first woman who happens to fancy you, unless you know immediately she is the real one for you. You look about a bit rather than simply sit and wait for some corporate giant to tell you how she ought to be.
I think now with the increasingly tiny internet-laden world that nothing takes long to look up and discover. But then film is supposed to a passion of mine so i might hunt that bit harder, while with your passions i'll always be in arrears (fnar) and no news story i write from the knowledge i store will be as good as yours.

*waffle*

You speak wisely, bwana. Likewise, I couldn't hold a torch to your uniquely entertaining scribings.

US. If you are really offended by my retaliation then for what it is worth I apologise. But you seem to hold yourself up as some authority on film and for some reason have this inverted snobbery. You assume I am into inaccessable little foreign inde films when nothing could be further from the truth, you suggest I am some kind of film wanker and then get upset by a retaliation.

If, as your PM's says you would like to get me banned permanently then fine, but I would have a little look at the assumptions you make about people before you get too upset by my writings.

US. In answer to your question, I don't wonder for a second why I get shit on here. It's because people's brains have been numbed by watching gash like Schindlers list.

There really is no hope for you I am afraid. I think for the first time in 8 years on here I will press the ignore list.

Dear 2008 film club,

I implore you to watch 'There Will Be Blood' over and over

of the 50 films Gareth has copied over from IMDB I have seen 49 (dunno #49)

the vast majority I would agree are ESSENTIAL viewing, some I wouldn't have as top 50 of all time (e.g Pulp Fiction, Memento, some of the Star Wars films, any of the Lord Of The Rings films - although they are all cracking fun) and there re some glaring omissios IMHO (e.g. Jaws, Wizard of Oz and any number of those 'art house' films that we're not allowed to mention on here because it's GG/ US's thread and we're only allowed to get off on utter CRAP like Transformers*

*a complete piece of shit

When you look at US' list from IMDB it does remind you of how many magnificent films have been made

I f***ing love movies

Far more than I love arguing about movies

that said, 'There Will Be Blood' is worth the entire career of Michael Bay multiplied by the entire career of George Lucas multiplied by the entire career of Joe Dante

John Candy widely accepted to a be a comic great, but none of his films ever rate very highly. I suspect that rather than a Top 50 ever - which is so open to argument - a Top 10 by genre would be more useful.

So you could argue that in the Top 10 Comedies, a John Candy film might get in. You could have a Top 10 Art House Films - and no one could argue about having art house movies in the list. You could even have a Top 10 TV Programme Inspired list that might include Transformers (my 14 year old raves about it - it rather passed me by).

Worth a shot? Might be a bit more democratic and inclusive and could engage more people.

Les, I don;t agree with that. I think the imdb guide is about as good as possible to get an overall mark of a film and its pretty much spot on. With over 100000 votes the average mark does not lie. Schindler's List was pretty much universally agreed as a work of genius and had 5 star reviews from just about everyone so for Nibble to disregard it as a pile of shite is absurd. I also do like hollywood films, Enchanted is a fabulous film, I loved Transformers but that does not make me a pea brain.

What I am saying US is that perhaps you should be more open to the ideas of people who don't necessarily enjoy mainstream cinema in the way you do. Liking mainstream cinema does not necessarily make you a pea brain but at the same token dismissing the idea that that form of film making is formulaic and plays to the highest common denominator is somewhat foolish.

I've never seen Schindler's list so can't comment on it as a film, but once again I don't take the IMDB rating system to highly because it doesn't tell me what I want to know. However given the films you like it is probably a clearer barometer of what films you may like. That is all.

Of course it is, unless you're a stuck up your own arse pretentious ponce, that is the ONLY reason for liking a foreign language film.
