South American teams and fans take these things very seriously whilst European clubs seem to treat it as a pain in the arse and play it like a friendly mostly, hence the frothing at the mouth by Palmeiras supporters last night.
If they win they seem to think it shows some kind of superiority over European teams.

It would be a better tournament if all teams cared rather than fulfilling a FIFA obligation.

It is based on a four year cycle (like the proper World Cup). The European qualifiers are the winners of the Champions League across that qualifying period (season 20/21- season 23/24) who are Chelsea (20/21 winners) Real Madrid (21/22 & 23/24) and Man City (22/23 winners), plus the next 8 highest ranked sides, after taking out the 'ineligible' teams. England is only allowed two entrants, so as the CL winners had taken those spots, Liverpool missed out despite being ranked high enough.

Is it a coincidence that fans, be they local or traveling, all seem to be wearing the same shirts of the football team they are supposedly supporting.
