Apologies if already done elsewhere - but what does everyone think about the latest FIFA nonsense?

Official sponsor Adidas complained to FIFA that England fans and others were daring to wear what they wanted to matches (ie lots of Nike caps).

FIFA then demanded stewards remove all Nike caps going in to the T&T match to be collected afterwards and not offend adidas. FFS.

It would be funny if it wasn't true. How was this even entertained as an idea, let alone enforced?

From the BBC website, loads of Dutch fans were asked to watch their last game in their pants, because they all turned up wearing trousers branded with a Dutch beer.

FIFA decided it was an attempted brand hijacking FFS, because it might have upset Budweiser.

Pathetic.

Not having seen a ticket, I am not sure but I doubt it mentions on the ticket what you can and cannot wear. If not then anyone asked to remove clothing will be well within their rights to sue for breach of human rights.

They did this to us at the Last Euro Championships in Portugal.

We were all wearing some Orange Conned hats with Heineken scribed on the side (we were watching Holland V Latvia) which were given to us. They wouldn't let us in with them on and they were doing this to everyone.

more to the point, The name on the ticket I had didn't match up with mine but obviously having the words Heineken on a hat were more imprtant to FIFA than touts. Twats.

So if Adidas are worried that the wearing of clothing from rival manufacturers during World Cup matches might somehow affect their brand image, what do they propose to do about the Umbro-made England kit (and any other non-Adidas brand team kits)?

After all, the England shirts with accompanying Umbro logo are far more likely to get significant amounts of camera-time than a Nike t-shirt or cap being worn by a fan.

It was featured in a lot of newspapers today, for whatever that's worth (including the supposedly more intellectual ones such as The Independant and The Telegraph).

in germany, german fans were warned by fifa not to wear their domestic club team's shirts, if they carry sponsor logos who do not participate in the world cup. those shirts would have been removed or have to be worn inside out...

pathetic

football is our game, the supporters... not some fukkin PR or marketing manager's event....:censored:

I can confirm that thousands of Dutch Heineken hats had to be discarded at the final turnstile before Germany v Holland in Porto 2 years ago.

Not Luton! Thank God
What the autorities are trying to prevent is ambush marketing. Addidas and all the rest of the official sponsor paid a lot of money for that right. A lot of the other companies that aren't officials sponsors also want in on the act so they'll try and do it other ways... like giving out free hats or even free tracksuits (and probably free beer!) just so that they will get their brand on tv.

Not just FIFA that do this type of thing. Olympics and other big events do it as well.
