Were you the cyclist in the stripes who cycled past me in Balham High Road this evening?

I, of course, stopped at the red light but someone in a Seagulls shirt whizzed past me.
Nope

Bloody hell then Simster, there are three cycling Seagulls fans on the A24 during rush-hour. We should form a club.

And you'e right: cyclists do rule in London.

Why oh why do cyclists along the seafront in particular STILL continue to cycle along the road and hold up the traffic as we dodge past them, when they have an empty cycle lane which is far safer for them?

I can't understand it. This morning, whilst in the traffic, I counted 10 cyclists on the road and only four in the cycle lanes.

The road is marginally safer for cyclists. As a motorist and cyclist I obey the Highway Code. These are just some of the idiots I have encountered whilst cycling:

In the Road:

1. The parked motorist who flings the driver's door open as you pass. On one occasion this occured just before I drew level with the car. As there was an oncoming car in the narrow road and using my US football training I virtually took the driver's door out. He was most miffed. I did point out that had he have used the rear-view mirror he would have avoided the situation.

2. The pedestian who walks out into the road without looking. On one occasion a large lump with half a brain cell walked out from parked vehicles straight into my path. As I could not avoid him (he was large) I had to knock him down. To avoid him would have resulted in serious injury to myself. He did go down on impact and so I got off the bike and picked him up. When he had finished explaining that he hadn't looked (yeah, right!) we both went our way.

3. The motorist. On many occasions I have had altercations with drivers, mostly because 'I didn't see you'. Jesus, I'm 6'2" weigh 200lbs and ride in a very high position on a Claude Butler mountain bike. The 'mental' woman passenger who shouted out at me after her chavvy driver swung out from a side street took the biscuit. 'Get some road tax' she shouted. When I pointed out that I pay my road-tax as a motorist her head visibly imploded. Then there was the driver of a van who pulled out of a side street knocking me off the bike. He said I didn't see you and I replied that he should have an eye-sight test.

In the Cycle Lane

1. Cycle Lane is not a concept that is recognised by many pedestrians or motorists or indeed cyclists. I get angry when I see cyclists breaking the Highway Code as it gives more fuel to the 'anti-cyclist' brigade. However when as a cyclist you do obey the laws you appear to be in the minority. The number of times I have cycled in the Lane along the seafront and stopped an inch in front of a bemused pedestrian walking blithely along beggars belief. Cycle lanes are brilliant if everyone recognises the fact that they are just for that pupose ie Cyclists. My theory on Cycle Lanes. As they have white lines and are reasonably straight they act as a guide for the 'alcoholically challenged' or just 'mentally challenged'.

Gunter - Have you ever used a cycle? If you haven't perhaps you may appreciate why they are not used by some cyclists.

Yes, perhaps I can see that now having read all the comments in the thread. The cycle lane should really be alongside the road, although to be fair, when I drove past there were hardly any people on the pavements. I would have thought it would be safer for the cyclists to use the lane.

We've all had the experience of being a pedestrian, cyclist and motorist.

In my experience as a motorist, cyclists are a bigger problem for me than pedestrians. As has been pointed out in this thread, cyclists are selfish, don't want to ride on bicycle paths and when on the road they go as far on to the road and away from the curb as possible for some warped reason, holding up traffic. This really pisses me off that they don't care for their own safety yet would only be happy to blame you if they were knocked over.

As a cyclist, pedestrians are most annoying because I ride on bicycle paths not roads, but they usually move out of the way and it's not that big a problem.

As a pedestrian, I don't often feel threatened by motorists. But I do by speeding cyclists. When I was a kid I was hit by some prick on a bike when crossing a road, the stupid shit didn't even stop to see if I was okay and should'nt have even been on the road anyway.

So in conclusion, from the perspective of a pedestrian, cyclist and motorist, cyclists are the worst people on the road!
