So, what is stopping you, Chappers?

Come on, get on your bike. You know it makes sense.

I started a similar thread a few months ago and I am in total agreement with the posters here. How many times have you been hit by a cyclist who ignores traffic lights or rides on the pavement ?

It's high time that all cyclists had third party insurance.

How many actual accidents are caused by bad cycling?

Against how many deaths are caused by bad, reckless, f*cking w*nkers who get behind the wheel and become totally cut off from reality and care for anything else.

Well I don't know, you tell me. I'm just speaking from personal experience. (I don't drive at present I might add, I sold my car a good while ago as I prefer to use public transport).

The best way to sort the one on the seafront would be to close the road to cars give the whole road to cyclists and tell the drivers to get off their lazy, fat arses, out of their cars, and stop destroying our city/country/planet by insisting that they must take their car everywhere they go.

Whilst in Denmark last Feb, I was stunned that despite the snow the roads were packed with cyclist easily the main form of transport in Copenhagen.

And I have never seen so many fit and health people unlike the blanmanghe's we have in London and Brighton.

I agree with your sentiments LC, but where I live there are off-road cycle lanes next to busy roads. It is annoying when cyclists won't go on them, and cycle on the road instead.

I agree with you LI, personally I'd like to see ALL cars banned from city centres but there again, it only takes one transport strike and you're fornicated. It would indeed be a good thing if more people cycled as it would almost certainly reduce the risk of heart disease and thus lower the NHS costs. Trouble is, it's easier to say than do. As had been said before why ohwhy do some many people feel the need to drive an SUV to take their kids 3/4 mile to school ?

Cycle lanes-what a great John Major legacy. I hardly ever see them being used (and I'm on the road nearly all day). All they've given us is a load of narrower roads all over the bloody country. Get rid of 'em I say!

Yes!

And make cyclists pay road tax, insurance and MOT!!

Didn't I post that? Or was it supposed to be a quote? Just confused me a bit thats all.

As self righteous cyclist, who does stick to the Highway Code, I am stunned by the quality of driving. Especially on the school run, which is for me the most dangerous part of the day.

Literally is not just one or drivers it is probably the majority. Personally, I would recommend that Drivers have to renew their driving tests every 10 years or so. When combined with such poor and quite clearly bad facilities for cyclist and also pedestrians. Accidents happen and people (cyclist) in their own “drive” for safety move onto pavements etc.

It certainly annoys me! And gives ammunition to the drivers who for some unknown reason have a perversity about cyclist.
This as outlined earlier appears to be a very British thing?

However, I can report some incidents that I have had with drivers which are bordering on unbelievable and still sometimes STILL frighten me. On average I experience one incident of bad driving/reckless/ or just didn’t see you once a week. Just to add I do wear the fluorescents!

Soon me and Ms LC will be taken our little baby on a bike to child minders etc.

Both of us are doing so with a great deal of trepidation.

In some respects the fact that we have to put up with some idiots in an one tonne vehicle that could easily wipe out my family is a restriction on our liberty. Just to add I have also been on pavements in London with scooters, motor bikes and cars, yes even cars driving down?

Yep, I thought it was a good quote so I used it to support and elaborate my point. Sorry for the confusion. I can't quite get the hang of blocking and bolding quotes.

I was saying the exact same thing today after an old bastard pulled straight in front of me on a roundabout without checking what was coming. I think it would be good but logistically a nightmare.

Don't get me started on school run drivers.

My partner has her own school which is located next to a suburban T-junction easily 120 feet wide. The number of 4x4s double and treble parked there - especially when she has asked the parents NOT to park there. And rather than driving round the block to get home, they do a bloody U-turn without properly looking (they are on a corner remember) which becomes a 7-point turn on a junction in which the Torrey Canyon could have nutmegged the Exxon Valdes.

It's the largest, most inappropriate road vehicle, carrying the smallest member of the family and distance that could easily be walked in 10 minutes. And they moan when they say we are becoming a nation of fatties. (Said the pot calling the kettle black.)

FFS, women (and it is exclusively women - sorry), walk! You want to parade yourselves for your competitive fashion parade outside the school, so bloody walk...

Too many cars

Fact is their are now too many cars on the road. When I can I now cycle down to work, it is often quicker, not only that but I am improving my health at the same time. The only problem I am faced with is some twat car drivers who fail to observe the highway code. We should all start getting on our bikes, it makes sense when you cant go anywhere in your car.

Are you two for real ? MOT stand for Ministry Of Transport. You used to take an MOT test hence the name stuck even though the M.O.T. is no longer called that.

Actually, I can't see why bikes can't be safety checked as well as carry third party insurance. Still, that being the case then dog and cat owners should have insurance not to mention horses.

MOT- Don't want to get too much into it as it is a silly point- but the cable on my front brake snapped the other day. I had to use my foot to help slow down and I hit the kerb.

If that was a car, people could be dead.

I dare someone to now say "Ahh, but you COULD have killed someone..." :D

Yes, cars don't use cables for braking these days. In fact the last car to be manufacturered with such was the Austin A35 which ceased production in 1959.

Point is that's hypothetical and bear in mind also that cars built in the last 20 years have brake failure warning lights.
