Do you remember Frank Lampard's unlikely goal?

It was always two years before England have a good team. But where is the left -sided midfileder coming from? And the goalkeeper?

The left sided midfielder is Sean Wright-Phillips, he is still in the development stage though, as for the goalkeeper, sorry perseus you have got me there...

Think I might have cocked it up a bit there, does S W-P play on the right?

Slight problem as he is right footed, but yeah, why not try him on the left. I think Milner maybe the one to watch there.

Regarding the keeper, if Kirkland starts the season at Liverpool, expect to see him make his debut against the Ukraine at St James Park next month.

It still escapes my as to why Sven doesn't stick Gareth Barry out there. He has been playing there for Villa for over a season now and is an excellent passer. Maybe he lacks a it of pace but his crossing and passing is pinpoint.

As for the keeper - I hope Robinson can come through well at Spurs, otherwise it's got to be Kirkland. David James is a bit like Tim Flowers, not very good but the best around at this momet. When Robinson and Kirkland have matured they will both be excellent.

Also you have Richard Wright to come back, who will at least offer some better cover than we had this tournament. It is odd that we have tradtionally produced decent keepers and all of a sudden we have nothing decent between the age of 24 - 30.

A lot of foreign keepers in the Premiership and it's the sort of position where we will pay the price because obviously there is only one goalkeeping slot and they very rarely get injured.

Look at the Premiership, how many sides have an English keeper as thir first choice? No more than five I would imagine.

Perhaps if we're lucky Kirkland and Robinson will be slugging it out in the way Clemence and Shilton did, with Richard Wright and Robert Green (who I thinbk is another excellent prospect) also there with a shout.

My fear with Robert Green is he will get talked up like Holt did at West Brom, as he is playing in front of a shite defence and so busy, but we shall see.

Not odd at all, when you consider that all but a couple of first choice keepers in the Premiership are foreigners now. In years to come we could have a similar crisis in the outfield as well, if the tidal wave of foreign nationals continue to swamp our top division at the current rate.

He was pretty solid last year as well though. The sad reality is that there are so few English keepers about that any who plays regularly in the Premiership is never going to be more than about fifth in line!

Spot on about Gareth Barry, Robert. He is the ideal man to fill the gap on the left side, his passing is excellent and although he does lack pace he gets himself in some very good positions. He has just had his best season for the Villa and should be rewarded, he certainly deserves a chance more than that waste of talent Joe Cole.

Goalkeeper?

Chris Kirkland.

Can't (excuse spelling) Gudaccni (Chelsea keeper) play for England?

Cudicini is available to play for England as he is an EU citizen who has been here for five years, but he doesn't want to. Along those same lines, would that not make Michel Kuipers available to play for England?

Agree - finding a new keeper is a must for the World Cup but hopefully Robinson or Kirkland will come good. I only hope Sven gives them a chance.

As for a left sided player, controversial I know but I think Julian Gray, formerly of the Palarse, might be worth a go in the future. He's fast, very skilful and naturally left footed. Will need to improve his attitude though.

I worry that Sven will stick with James until WC 2006.

Kirkland is so injury-prone, and Robinson has changed clubs. Personally, I expect Spurs' fortunes to improve and Robinson to be the best English keeper in the Premiership this season.

Re. the left, I still think Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge are the two best left-footed left sided players we've got by some considerable distance. Barry is not the real deal, Julian Gray has potential.

I was also hoping that Glen Johnson would develop as our right-back for WC 2006 but £13 million Paulo Ferreira may have scuppered that idea...
