You know it's a pointless training game when calamity is trusted in goal :lolol:

Way out west
Robinson is starting to look like being the first choice England keeper for many years to come, thank goodness, I don't think my nerves could bear a World Cup with James between the sticks.

As much as I rate Robinson as a goalkeeper, i wouldn't fancy him in a penalty shoot out

Well, along with the fact that i've never seen him save a penalty (although I'm sure he must have done), he hardly fills the goal. Watching the cup final the other week you could somehow tell that Reina was going to be good - he's not only athletic, but quite big build as well. Similarly Ricardo when we got knocked out to Portugal.

I'm not certain though - for all I know he might be an expert penalty saver.

???

Robinson is taller than both Reina and Ricardo - perhaps you're talking about stature, although I can't see that Robbo's lacking in that. He saved Sheringham's penalty on the last day of the season, btw - even if it wasn't a great strike.

I'd much rather him for penalties - don't forget James didn't get near one of Portugal's seven penalties.

i got back yesterday after a marvellous day out
came back with a fine selection of world war 1 tommy helmets and inflatable spitfires!

also after the game, i came out the stretford end to fine a house with a massive oil drum cut in half, each half full of charcoal, with hundreds of chicken legs being barbequed, and it match a great post match snack before the long trek home

it was the best day of my life

old trafford is simply incredible, and despite all the ribbing i took in wetherspoons before the game for having "crouch 21" on the back of my away shirt, it proved worth it - what a player, what a man, what a god

What this whole argument comes down to is Gerrard v Lampard. For Liverpool, Gerrard is given the room to do whatever the hell he wants, and as a result he is out of this world. For England, Lampard wants to do that too (and IMO is not as good at it). This means Gerrard has to play an almost defensive role, which of course he is not as good at - still decent, but not amazing. How people like you can describe him as being in "poor form" is just an utter joke.
He is in poor form. 5 years without a decent performance is poor.

Gerrard gets the free role for Liverpool because they play 4-5-1. We can't play that. He IS overrated. If you watch him for 90 minutes he's not usually that effective. It's just that he pops up with a goal and glosses over the gaping flaws in his game (such as his inability to pass the ball 6 yards).

Lampard is a much better user of the ball, has positional discipline (and is therefore better defensively and for the team all round), and scores more goals. Gerrard will only be effective for England if we give him the free role from the right and that is never going to happen.
