4-1-4-1 would be the system to play if we had a natural target man, certainly. In the absence of such a player, 4-4-2 is probably the way to go, but with either Lampard or Gerrard making way for a holding player.
It's a good job 6-0 wins over minor footballing nations means we can forget about difficult and troubling questions like that now - onward with the big striker and the non-passing midfield! :D

But Steve "never does anything in an England shirt" Gerrard only plays the way he does, because that overrated oaf Lampard hogs all the attacking glory. Give Gerrard the freedom to get forward, and he's twice the player Lampard is. Gerrard and Carrick - now that would be some midfield!
Not really. Lampard or no Lampard Gerrard is well overrated, and hasn't EVER performed in an England shirt while Lampard has.

I agree, it's down to the way he's used. At Liverpool he's played on the right and allowed to roam, nullifying his intrinsic shiteness in central midfield. When asked to play as a central midfielder for England he looks poor, because he is poor. And since Beckham is better on the right it's the bench for the ovverated one.

Mark, you cannot actually be serious? Steven Gerrard on the BENCH?:shootself

Yes, yes i can.

Gerrard is QUALITY, but for Liverpool. For England he has been utter pony for the last 4 years, i only hope he proves me wrong in his inevitable world cup performances. Lampard is on fire in terms scoring goals and contributing with assists, but we need a holding midfielder - Carrick is the answer, but it is not going to happen even if Gerrard keeps up his poor form internationally, simply because he is so good at the domestic level.

Worried about Andy Cole's lightening reactions and Cambell seems to have gone all Frank Bruno.

Im sorry mark but I think you've gone mad! If you had to choose between lampard/gerrard I would personally go for gerrard. Better all round midfielder and has the ability to drag a team from the dead with moments of genius. Lampard is quality dont get me wrong and his goals are important but I think Gerrards role today was to sit behind Lampard mostly which is why he didnt look so effective. Both together playing well would be ideal.

How people like you can describe him as being in "poor form" is just an utter joke.

Well he blatently is - he's not half the player he is in a Liverpool shirt. Yes, that might be because of Svens system, but Lampard has given good performances consistently, and as a result deserves a place - if it was Lampard producing poor (as in NOT the standard given at club level) I would want him dropped, and then let Gerrard be let loose in his supposed 'natural' position.
