encores and gigs

I went to see New Order last week, they were fantastic but it reminded me of how much I hate encores. They went off without playing Blue Monday or Love Will Tear Us Apart, so we all knew they were coming back on. Then we had to stand clapping and cheering them until they did.

We are just strong the ego of the bands so they will finish their set. This is not asking for more it is asking them to finish. Complete waste of time IMHO, I can't see the point of this kind of encore.

Let's get back to them playing their full set and us asking for more if it is good enough, not being held to ransom by them holding out on their most popular song. (on a side note Blue Monday was probably the worst song they played)

Am I alone in this thinking, my friends certainly looked at me sideways when I mentioned my thoughts (I am quite used to this). They said they enjoyed the theatre of it and it made them feel part of the gig.

Bernie has frequently said, he would love to not play Blue Monday, but they just can't do it.

He also has nightmares about being booed while playing it!

this happened at a recent Electric 6 gig, but it backfired on everyone.the band went off, audience applaused for a few minutes lights stayed off while they were lapping it up, but the audience started getting tired off it and the applause slowly got quietier, eventually they didnt even bother coming back out.i remember thinking there was no need to leave it that amount off time to come back . i am a regular gig attendee and thought it was abit prolonged, so no encore.

Whilst I dont disagree with you (prob same set list as I when I saw them in London in Dec) it's funny to bring this topic up when talking about a band who used to be notorious for not doing encores.

I think that was why I got so irritated, because I didn't think they did and I always respected that.

The whole encore thing is predictable and whilst I rarely join in with the whoop whoop clapping stuff, I almost never leave either. Went thru a stage couple of years back of seeing about 8 bands in a row who didn't do encores. Liked it. (inc Los Camps, BSP, Glasvegas, Joy Formidable and Local Natives).

Saw Motorhead a couple of years ago and Lemmy got it right when he said "you know what happens now, we go off for rest, you cheer, we'll come back and play some more songs. See you in a couple of minutes"

Probably the strangest one for encores that I saw was Prince. Went to a gig of his at the ICC in Birmingham in the mid 90's as I was working up there and staying in the hotel next to the venue. He finished the gig, house lights went up and most people started to leave. I was in no rush as it was less than a five minute walk from my seat to my bed so hung around. I noticed a hard core of people not moving so decided to wait and after about ten minutes he came back on stage and played another half an hour to probably 10% of the original crowd.

Apparently he does this a lot. At his after show things last year (or was it the year before?) he either played 10 mins or 2 hours.

I once saw REM at at Rock AM Ring in Germany and they played straight through as it was raining so everyone could go back to their tents to get dry.

I saw U2 in 1982 as a support, and they pretended to be leaving after every song.
"thanks you've been a great audience" from Boneo, big waves, bows and etc - then just stayed. The audience tended to give them more applause thinkjing that was it for them as each song ended. A bit of a trick there, I thought.

I saw Yusek last year, in front of only 50 people at Coalition. When he finished his set he said something like "we're supposed to go off now but we'll hang around, you can clap a little and then we'll start playing again." He smiled at the audience then knocked off another couple of tunes.

The tickletastic Ken Dodd did a 3 hour set at The Dome said 'i'll let you off for a break' & half an hour later came back for another 2 hours

When I saw Hugh Cornwell he said "It's nearly the end of the show but I can't be arsed to go off & wait for you to demand an encore so I'll just play them now & we can all go home". Which he did.
