Why don't we play Elphick? Ohhhhh shit... Don't worry what about Cook, I'm sure can play CB. Oooops. Actually, maybe this would be a good time for Grant Hall to get a run out

Thanks for that, Mr Hindsight.

We could do with a natural left sided midfielder who can defend but haven't got one as even Orlandi is more akin to attacking.

Sounds like David Livermore to me!

Or a more modern version, Simon Lappin. On loan from Norwich to someone, he'd do a good job. Maybe Bradley Johnson if Norwich don't play him anymore, I haven't spotted him recently. Can't think of anyone else, hopefully our scouting system has been out in force.

On the bench for them today, I believe.

I wonder if he's returning from injury or whether he's out of favour. Happily, one of the chaps in my football team tonight is a Norwich fan so I'll ask him!

I am glad that I am not the only person having problems thinking of known players to fill that position.

I don't really think it matters too much that we can't, we'll sign someone Spanish we're unfamiliar with.

I hope so as we need somebody there I think especially when Bridge is out either injured or suspended. The problem as I se it is hat i is not a position that comes naturally to most players so it becomes a specialist position and the good players there are greatly sought after.

Personally, I think the position is completely worthless. Painter isn't a bad player, and Bridge certainly isn't. We don't have to have someone on the left whose primary concern is defending. That's what the man in the central midfield should be doing and quite frankly, I don't see any reason why Orlandi isn't played in that position. From left to right, with everyone fit, surely it has to be Orlandi, Bridcutt (deepest), Hammond/Crofts. And then Mackail-Smith up front with Buckley one side and Barnes/LuaLua/Dave/Dobbie/Hoskins on the other, but without the unneccessary role of holding the full backs' hand. I'm not suggesting leaving the full backs exposed, we've tried that in the past and we all know what happens... But we unneccessarily sacrifice a player in this system, EVERY game. And I don't see the point.

Bridcut cannot be expected to be winning balls in the centre of midfield to break up play and then 2 secs later be checking out a fast right winger like Zaha to help out the full back it just isnt physically possible. Incidentally according to BBC Sport Johnson started for Norwich today.

From what my son was told yesterday El Abd is out for a few weeks, recurring hamstring problem, Bridge indefinitely cartilage trouble and Painter a couple of weeks ankle ligaments. I am sure that Vincelot cannot be recalled until the loan is up at Christmas and although the loan window has closed there are provisions for an emergency loan if short of players so do we qualify under those terms with all of our injuries etc.

Grant Hall would have been useful now.

Was discussing this yesterday and we really are short at the back. Ive always believed in the mentality of having 2 players for each position in case of injury/suspension especially with defenders. To only have three centre backs is absolutely mad having lost Steve Cook, Tommy Elphick and Grant Hall recently. With El Abd injured and Dunk suspended what happens if Greer gets injured in the next game or Calderon gets sent off? We genuinely need to arrange cover in the January transfer window. Gus's desperation to prove he was right with CMS by building a strike force and supporting mid around him is blinkering him to the defensive problems we have and he needs to look into it in the worst way.

Did i see somewhere pre-season that we signed a big centre half from Coventry called Courtney Richards? If i'm correct, worth a shout?

He has played in the Bridcutt role when I have seen him play and looked quite promising a lot better than the full backs in the DS.

what's the point in signing these lads for the development squad if none of them can cover for the first team during an injury crisis?

there must be someone who can do a job in defence out of that lot, otherwise what's the point? let them go and get first team football elsewhere if we have no intention of ever playing them

Can we still sign free agents?

Ricardo Gardner is available, can play left-back/left wing-back. Could sign on a month long contract to get us through this sticky patch. Not suggesting in anyway he is a long-term solution, but must be better than the current options.
