paid deposit and got the rest to pay. this was how it worked out

Never realised you could book a holiday with a just a deposit ???
Always believed that when you book it you have to pay in full, or if wanted credit you would use a credit card.
Didn't realise holiday companies had gone into lending money.

General "rules" for paying for Holidays:

Scheduled Airlines (BA, Virgin etc..) give Agents special fares where if you book accommodation at the same time they allow a deposit and in general terms they are cheaper. If there is one of these Special Fares available, you'd pay roughly £100-£150 deposit. There is also a benefit to secure these type of fares as until they are "ticketed" by the airline (when you pay the balance) they are relatively flexible to make changes. Plus if you book flight/hotel at the same time, you will get ATOL Protection.

Agents generally can take deposits for accommodation - roughly 10% or £50

Balances would typically be due 12-16 weeks prior to Travel.

If you choose a holiday with Low Cost Flights through an Agent, you have to pay the full price of the flights upfront, but generally a deposit would be available for the accommodation.

If you booked directly online with the airlines, regardless of whether they were Scheduled or Low Frills, you'd pay the full amount up front.
