We were thinking of renting our house out in Grimsby (4 beds) so we could rent a place (2 beds) within travelling distance of Brighton only to find it would cost us an extra £600 a month over and above what we could get in rent for our house.

Eastbourne a decent 2 bed can be had around 600, certainly cos I just googled for 600-700 (and would you pay asking price anyway???) so ummm are you getting negative money for a 4 bed in Grimsby? There's a 595 one not too bad. Even make an offer on something amazing and see what they say.

Just on a legal point about your flat. If indeed it is an illegal sublet, in that the person you are renting from, rents it from the Housing Association and they have not asked for and been given permission to sublet then you could be screwed. I would be amazed if permission to sublet was given other than to rent out a spare room. Assuming like you say you have a rental agreement, unless it can be proved you were aware that the person you rented from did not have the right to let the property you will not face any charges yourself. However you will be asked to leave and if you refuse a court order sought to enforce your eviction.

If it was me I would do a land registry check at Online services - Land Registry - UK Government Department it cost £4 but will tell you who the owner of the property is. In theory if it is the housing association you could then try refusing to pay you rent since the tenancy agreement you have would be worthless and not enforceable so the person you are renting from could not go to court about it. They could of course send some mates round and just throw you out.
