OK so I just tried the council's emergency number and they told me to put towels down on the floor and try the housing association tomorrow.

So I've put towels down and gave the revolting mess of a ceiling a prod and made a little hole where water is absolutely pissing down from. The towels are already soaked through

My downstairs neighbour called out the Fire Brigade out on me for a minor plumbing leak (a drip) in the middle of the night. They could identify the hidden leak quickly.

I've tried the housing association and all their contact numbers just say they're closed and to ring a premium rate number for emergencies, but my mobile won't ring premium rate numbers!

I had thought that the water coming through would save me a job but the plant is already drowning.

I'd hate to call the fire brigade out if it's just me overreacting. I mean the rain could stop any minute and it would just look untidy and smelly. I just don't have the experience to know how serious it is

Is one of the premium numbers on that say no to 0870 website?

FFS don't call the fire brigade. People who call the emergency services expecting them to do the job of a builder or plumber should be charged a hefty callout fee. It reminds me of the time someone was threatened on facebook and the great minds of NSC said to call 999

Get a grip, stop panicking and look at the facts. You've said the rain is coming through above a bay window, there's probably a leak in the roof. You can't do anything to stop it and it's the job of the housing association to fix it. All you can do is be a good neighbour and limit the damage for them and inform the housing association of the problem.

Don't be an arse and not try very hard just because you're pissed off about her being on holiday either, help others and you'll feel good about yourself - everyone's a winner

I'm not pissed off, I'm genuinely concerned!

I've no intention of calling the fire brigade out. It's not their problem at all.

I am doing my best to limit the damage and will be calling up the housing association when they're open tomorrow

I used to manage a household insurance team. You have done everything that would have been advised for a roof leak even to someone who was at their own home. Pierce ceiling and put some towels down. Thats all you can do until they get a contractor out. Often in a roofing emergency they wouldnt come out until it stopped raining anyway due to health and safety so its fine just to wait until tomorrow. You have done what you can. Just follow it up with a call to housing association tomorrow. Incidentally I would let the person whose home it is know. Then its their decision what they want to do.

Tell the housing association if the water causes a electrical problem and someone dies or is injured it will be down to them - they have a responsibility as they own the property.

Get the name of whoever you speak to - that should worry them enough to at least get someone in to find out what it is.

So you can buy/obtain a property in a facility designed for social housing and rent it out privately ?

Doesn't that defeat the object of social housing.

Right to Buy allows tenants to buy social housing , with a mortgage on the property it can then be rented out at the market rate which not only pays the mortgage but helps the owner to rent something better elsewhere.

That may be true, although I've always assumed my flat is illegally sublet. Suits me though, as I pay way below market rate. But of course I do have to share a building with social housing tenants...

We were thinking of renting our house out in Grimsby (4 beds) so we could rent a place (2 beds) within travelling distance of Brighton only to find it would cost us an extra £600 a month over and above what we could get in rent for our house.
