"Don't kill Rooney......" ?

Oh purlease! There's a plea to supporters not to cruxify Rooney now, for getting sent off in an important game like that.

"this player is the future of English footall, we need to accept it"

Accept that we will always have a player who loses his rag and gets sent off for something that silly, to the joy and advantage of the opponents?

Has he just learned a lesson?
Don't make me laugh, the World Cup is NO place to be learning simple lessons of self control and self-discipline - we shouldn't even field anyone who doesn't possess it to start with.
Protect the ego and uncontrollable temperament of a player just because he takes on defenders, because he has talent?

Sorry, but when it means we are hamstrung, down to 10 men, to go out of another World Cup - I think that dick-head owes all of us a VERY humble apology and he shouldn't play for our country again until he's sorted out his incredible stupidy and temper.

.....and to think that England laid out a red carpet for an injured Rooney, gave him carte blanche for a place in the side while getting match fitness back!

He took the place of another player who HAD scored several goals for England in recent games, just because he is seen as a 'prodigious talent'. More like a precocious ego if you ask me.

I wouldnt be upset if he didnt play for Englang for a long time.

What he did yesterday was unacceptable and he just doesnt learn.

Defoe, Bent etc may not be as good as Rooney what at least they will stay on the pitch.

As far as I am concerned Rooney has grown up a lot, his reaction after been subbed in a previous game shows his level of commitment to England and his eagerness to play, the fact that he entered the tournament whilst recovering from injury is testament to that. Rooney is a skilful player who gives everything, there aren't too many of them to go around, he must be in the next England squad that he is available for.

What he did yesterday was unacceptable, that is to say the stamping incident, as for the push on Ronaldo he should have known better. In his defence he was being fouled by two players at the same time, many a player in the tournament would have gone down squealing like a stuck pig (are you listening Ronaldo, you wee girly cheating bastard), instead Rooney tried to stay on his feet and plough on through.

Did the sending off affect the outcome of the game, possibly, we will never know. So Rooney got sent off, whoopee doo, at least I know that the England team is full of players who are committed and don't cheat or roll over feigning injury and looking for a card at the earliest opportunity.

To give Rooney the Beckham 98 treatment would be stupid, counter-productive and also miss the real reasons for our defeat.

We have played shit all tournament. Rooney, 20, when he did start playing was asked to play a lone role up front for which he is singularly unsuited.

Basically Sven has loaded all the weight of expectation onto his shoulders because he didn't have the bottle to drop Lampard and give the lad a proper partner, or chance to drop off - which is what he does.

Only Beckham's extraordinary strength of character carried him through that stuff in 98. Other players would have gone under, never to return.

Rooney is clearly not blameless - although I completely agree with Easy on another thread, he was not even goping to be booked for the 'stamp'/accident, but instead has gone for an innocuous hand-off to the chest. The ref has got out of jail once his assistant has told him 'You've f***ed up - but have a look at this on the video! It's your lucky day'.

To crucify a young guy who arrived injured and was played out of position would be just insane when the main reasons for our failure to progress lay elsewhere.

From bbc

The England striker was dismissed on 62 minutes for appearing to stamp on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.

There was confusion over whether Rooney was dismissed for the foul or for the subsequent push on Cristiano Ronaldo.

But England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed Rooney was given his marching orders for the alleged stamp.

Thats just the ref looking at the video and telling sven he was dismissed for the stamp. At the time the ref sent him off for the "push", he didn't react at all to the stamp just gave a free kick and then as soon as he pushed him he decided to call him over and send him off.

Stamping on people is like what they do in Rugby. Rooney is a hooligan.

He was lucky not be sent off twice.

Get real will you. You make us out to be completely different from everyone else - we're just the same. We cheat, cajole, and feign injury just the same as everyone else does.

No, we don't. And unfortunately it's starting to cost us. If you asked every international referee which players are the most honest on the pitch, they would say British players.

That Ref who did the battle of Nuremberg admitted afterwards that officials all knew Portugal were a bunch of cheats - he was just surprised Holland were as bad.

He will not learn - that is clear he has been around for 3 years now and during that time has spent most of it trying to get sent off.
