Do we just have too many ordinary players?

In my opinion the reason why we struggle this season is the fact just like last season we have players who either just straight are not good enough....ie the youngsters who Wilkins will endlessly put faith in, due to the fact he brought their development on and its his squad...

Adam El Abd - average defender & Poor Midfielder

Fraser - Average Midfielder & in my opinion is not fit to lace the boots of chippy when he wasnt past it

Bas savage - Again another average player

Joe gatting - Say no more

Jake robinson - 4 years on and little but no progress, make or break season

Thats also not mentioning....Hart,Mayo & proberly reid.....who imho will all be passed it or as good as very soon.

The squad is just so bare....the quality had been sold or retired.....the likes of cullip,virgo,zamora,Knight,Currie,Harding...seem a distant memory...

The squad is looking more ordinary and average than when Micky adams was here....its slightly better than the horton days...but not one part of me thinks that this currant crop would even win the League 2 title let alone challenge in this league....thats football I suppose.

Lynch - Tackles like a lion.

Cox - Skilful with the ball, takes on and beats defenders for fun.

Whing - Easily good enough to play in the Championship, for some bizarre reason wants to play for the Albion, I respect and welcome his opinion.

Forster - Proven goalscorer in the Championship, another player who chose to join us instead of plying his trade elsewhere.

Not all doom and gloom, there is a little bit of silver lining the cloud that many think has settled above Brighton.

Completely agree, those three in particular (maybe hinsh if fully fit) could fire us into the playoffs, but yes we need strenthening, as yes we do have too many average players: Gatting, Savage, Loft etc

Savage is never going to be a world beater, but he brings something different to the table and without him last season we may have faced the drop.

It would be churlish to write off Fraser and Gatting as just average players. Last season was their first full season in professional football! They are not going to be the finished product straight away. Average is definitely the wrong term to use at the moment.

Robinson is a difficult one. On his day, he can cause the opposing team to panic and certainly can hit the target, but I think we are going to have to wait a bit longer. Even though he has been around for a long time, he is still effectively a 'kid' in footballing terms. He can do a job on the right.

We need to put the opposition under more pressure than we do. Last season, we looked scared to shoot on occasions.

Reid hasn't really had a real chance to settle yet! Before his injury, I thought he looked like one of our best players.

The truth of the matter is we have too little experience for a variety of reasons as you know. Ideally we would be blooding the young guys gradually, but they are thrown into the thick of it straightaway.

Alan Hansen was right - You do not win anything with kids.

I really would like to see Fraser played in the central midfield role with Hammond on Sat in place of ElAbd and Jake (if fit) or Reid (if fit enough) on the right. Or Reid in the centre and Jake on the right as option two.

Beggars can't be choosers. And we're beggars. The playing and selling-on of the homegrown youth team has more than played its part in keeping the club afloat. The youth have done us proud.

We will all have to wait and see. I will give em till october and if they are not mid table or better, then Yes they are a poor group ( remember this is 3rd division football)

What more concerns me is that we do not appear to have any loanees on the horizon or any other "new "players.

Has Wilkins given up on that idea?
Has Dean White actually seen anyone play outside of Gillingham?
Has all our players budget now been syphoned off to the "build Falmer fund"?

good point.

And as said in an earlier thread , they r more likely to fight wih each other than the opposition

Although only exception to this ordinary thing in their team must be old robert lester (well u know the rest :))

every club at this level has ordinary players, like every other club we have had in the past mcphee, mcammon (why do they always start with mc)

we have ordinary players plus some that are going to or have made it(butters, forster)

lynch is definately better than league one I gurantee that revell will play higher than league one so will Elphic and Fraser and maybe Cox.

The fact that we have home grown players that are going to be more than ordinary(if you can define ordinary) is a testiment to what we have achieved with little investment.

I would agree with Fraser, can't remember seeing him play last season, was fairly impressed with his performance against Crewe...certainly showed plenty of promise, he and Whing worked very well together, pity he was banjaxed and had to go off after 70 minutes when we went 4-3-3.

Given your location have you even seen these players play?!
Just a question like...

Ha Ha...A very good and apt question indeed..

Yes I have,Quite a lot last season. I only left for pastures new at the beginning of april.....

That is exactly how I know they are a very ordinary crop indeed....add to it a couple of flair midfielders and those ordinary players will kick on to a new level in my opinion...

In my opinion the reason why we struggle this season .

We have played one league game and a cup game against higher level opposition, both games away from home and have lost by the odd goal in both. Can this really be summed up as "struggling this season" :thud:

They are ordinary players that is why they are playing in the 3rd tier of English football but the more owrying aspect is that teams like Orient have strengthend their squad and bought in experienced pros and have started off really well. We have not covered our most obvious needs and appear to be going to rely on kids on loan.

Forster and Whing are good signings but we need more experience and quality than just those 2 if we are to do well this season.
