I think we’re undervaluing player development here. Lewis Dunk in 2017-19 would be been seen as the epitome of a backs-to-the-wall centre back under Hughton, and at 28, probably incapable of much else.
Three years later he was making the most passes in the Premier League at the heart of RDZ’s total football.

21yo … so much time and capacity to develop a player and FH clearly wants a lot more physicality in his squad next season.

If Coppola needs half a season to get to grips with what Hurzeler wants from him, that’s fine by me.
Great analysis and completely agree.

If there is a problem with passing, and i'm not saying there is, we must have reason to think that this is going to improve significantly.

Even JPVH. Great defender. Misplaces a good number of passes though. It's just a consequence of risks he is asked to take. I bet this will get better with age as it will for Coppola

I agree, I do not see him as a carthorse. Coppola seems to be duel winner who can then get the ball to the nearest teammate who can then get on with moving the ball.

I suspect people are probably making more of the passing stats than they need to here, because he's playing in a team who have low possession.

Forgive me for stereotyping but they don't breed players with no technique in Italian football, do they? You don't get to play multiple games in Serie A and win full caps for the national side if you're a giant clogger with zero technical ability.

At 21, there's bound to be development areas but I'm confident he's not going to be Steve Foster (with all due respect to Steve Foster), twatting every clearance straight into orbit.

Well, my mate has read all 11 pages (200+ posts) on NSC about this fella – and they reckon he's shitehouse.

Get rid, PRONTO.

If you were so minded you could trawl through all of the centre back signings and you would find plenty of examples of why are signing this bloke when we already have better centre backs.

Check
JPVH
Adam Webster
Big (tm) Dan Burn
Shane Duffy

and just for the stoped clock fans also check that centre back we signed who, Pompey fans were convinced was a future England Captain and who we then lent out to a series of Championship clubs.

Last night he came on as a sub for the Italian senior team. He has subsequently travelled to Slovakia to be a member of the Italian U-21 squad for the UEFA U-21 European Championships (they play their first match tomorrow).

What are you expecting, exactly?

Was an amusing way of putting them in their place though. Sign their best player and then never play him.

I'm actually surprised that Brighton are signing him.

His passing and ball progression stats are concerning. Maybe they want to add a different profile to the CB options at the club, but he's definitely more of an old fashioned CB than a modern, ball playing type. Strong in the air and likes a tackle.
