Dick Knight obviously has not heard of the saying (if indeed there is one!) that a good chairman should be seen, but not heard

Loves the the sound of his own voice, and will often take the credit when it is not his alone to take (Zamora signing for one) and has annoyed me in the past when he has come out with the "we tried to sign X player and had a bid on the table" but the deal never materialised...

But he took over during the dark days of 1996/97 when most wouldn't have touched us with a barge-pole and he has stood by the club through thick and thin - deserves his place in the spotlight if/when Falmer is eventually realised, but have never really cared for the man

If Knight had stood down a couple of years ago when he realised he could no longer afford to keep us in the Championship he would have secured himself a very special place in the clubs history, by staying on he spoilt his earlier efforts.

Apart from moving us ever closer to a brand spanking new stadium? :thud:

It is not as simple as stepping down if he couldn't afford to keep us in the Championship. Firstly, what sort of person would have wanted to invest in a club without a stadium and without planning permission. Secondly, it is not simply about handing over the reins to any old sailor with money (See Archer etc). Thirdly, I can't think of a third at the moment.

Oh dear. :thud:

Go on then. Follow that thought process through, and let us know how it would have concluded in your eyes...

Out of a point of interest what would we do if a rich person did want to invest in the Albion given the stance of no one person will ever own the club? I mean surely if somebody was willing to invest £millions in the club they'd want ownership?

That does seem to be a bit of a sticking point. Do we really want some multi-millionaire to have complete control of proceedings? For every decent owner (Madejski), for example) there are plenty of swines who do not know how to run a club properly, price out the average supporter, throw millions about, waste millions, put the future of the club at risk etc.

Football is a danger unto itself. I am not saying I wish Brighton to stay small time and a tinpot organisation with an amatuerish feel, but I wouldn't want us to sell our soul. The romantic in me would want us to make our way to the top flight (and stay there) through guile, panache and living within our means, but that is now nigh on impossible. :(

It got me thinking about it when there was a lot of talk about David Gold investing in the club, Loads of fans seemed keen on the idea but under club policy it's very unlikely to happen. I understand why Knight said it when he took over from Archer but football has moved on from there and clubs who want success look for a sugar daddy to provide it. It would be a shame to miss out on our chance if it ever arose.

The thing is, I don't think we are a hugely attractive prospect. We only have planning permission for a c24,000 seater stadium and I think it would be highly unlikely that we would be able to build massively upon that. Unless you have someone like Dave Whelan (a born and bred), I can't see anyone wanting to invest huge sums in Brighton. Do we have any multi-millionaires (other than the current lot) that are Brightonians?

Take Portsmouth for example. They are potentially in sever financial strife, yet they have the possibility of a huge stadium to keep up with the Joneses. I think we are just going to have to make do with The Championsip and maybe a place in the Premiership, if there is a Euro-League breakaway.

Why would a non-Brighton fan want to invest in the club when he might be able to buy a number of other clubs with much more potential?

I do not begrudge Dick any moments of glory after all the shite he has had to put up with over the last 11 years. He deserves it more than anyone.

What exactly shit has he put up with .... ??

I will accept that he has fought, many times losing the fight for survival, however it now seems that we have secured the new stadium. maybe !!

He loves every god damn minute of it .....

He is generally revered by most on here and no more so than himself !!

Without the struggle he would be the one person he would hate to be and thats the unknown marketing bloke.

But he has assumed the role of marketing guru and many suck up to him, fine, but never feel too sorry for self appointed saviours.

I like it in the playoff final DVD he has a fruedian slippage by saying "MY fans are delighted!".

I like the bloke don't get me wrong, but he definitely reckons he's an Albion legend.

GULP! He is a legend. How many other people came forward and saved the club in the dark days.

???

Stood down for who exactly?

I don't recall hordes of Billionaires fighting each other to buy the club. In fact, I don't recall anybody making a serious offer for the club. Cue the cleaner woman bleating about 'Steve' and his consortium...

He faces a fair amount of criticism.

I will accept that he has fought, many times losing the fight for survival, however it now seems that we have secured the new stadium. maybe !!

He loves every god damn minute of it .....

We are in a much higher league position and with a permanent home on the way. How exactly has he lost the fight for survival many times?

He is generally revered by most on here and no more so than himself !!

Does he post on here?

Without the struggle he would be the one person he would hate to be and thats the unknown marketing bloke.

I would imagine that he did not forsee himself being the chairman for such a long time. I am sure he was looking forward to a long and happy retirement. Then his wife died and he was dragged into saving OUR club.

But he has assumed the role of marketing guru and many suck up to him, fine, but never feel too sorry for self appointed saviours.

He IS a selg appointed saviour as no-one else was willing to step in and put in the man hours.

Your dislike for the man is completely and utterly moronic. There must be something personal to it. Time and time again you make yourself look like a ignoramus and never EVER have a decent word to say for the guy. Of course he has made mistakes, as we all do, but your criticisms know no bounds.

Its easy to pick holes now, when we are having a bad run of league form, Falmer situation getting a bit eary as it draws closer. But I bet you buggers wernt saying that when the bloke took over before we very nearly went down the shitter.

Ive got total respect for the guy. Dick Knight is an Albion ledgend, and long may his services to the club continue.

bloody right mcghee should take the fall for that one. turienzo was utterly shite and was signed by mcghee so your point is??

that mcghee thought he wasnt good enough, hence why he didnt offer him a contract after the friendly game (lewes?) he played in

yet because he was found by a contact of dick knight, we are suddenly offering him a contract and paying a ludicrous amount to an agent
