In the field
To be fair, Sunderland need a manager to gee them up for their final seven games. Di Canio may not have Premiership experience but he has the proper coaching badges, got Swindon playing some good football and, crucially, has an unbelievable amount of self-confidence which can only help the players in the run-in. He will truly believe in his and the players' abilities to stay up, and in a relegation scrap that is a large amount of the battle won.

It's a shame when politics gets in the way of sport. Like so many areas in life now it seems.

Not many footballers end up having to meet holocaust survivors to explain their views.

..and not many footballers use FOOTBALL to pronounce them to the world.

The only person to blame for getting politics in the way of football is Di Canio.

are they going to change their nickname from "The Black Cats" to "The Black Shirts"?

Possibly some mistake. O'Neill went to see the chairman on Saturday morning and said "what this club really needs is a good old fashioned right winger."

In the lower divisions agreed but in the Premier League I don't think the same applies. Can't see a bit of confidence solving Sunderland's scoring problems in the space of 7 games considering the injured Fletcher has netted a third of their goals. Danny Graham needs to come good pretty fast. The danger now is that if Di Canio fails to make an instant impact, the fans will be furious with the strange appointment and the unsettling effect of that might just be enough to drag them down.

Will he keep them up this season = probably.

Will he still be manager of Sunderland 10 games into next season = no.
