So his local, non-league club is facing financial trouble, and he steps in to steady the ship.

That's rather lovely.
Saw him play (for Wycombe I think) one Tuesday night a few of seasons ago at Cambridge United.

All through the second half, when he was keeping goal in front of the home end, he was on the receiving end of a constant barrage of “fatty give us wave” or “fatty keeper!” chants for the entire 45 minutes.

Occasionally, when the ball was up the other end, he’d play up to it by hitching his shorts right up as high as he could and striding around on his 18 yard line, much to the amusement of the good folk of East Anglia who were beginning to wonder why they’d come out on a Tuesday night to watch Cambridge vs Wycombe Wanderers.

Then, on the final whistle, he turned around and clapped the home support before taking off his gloves and giving them to a young girl in a replica Cambridge Utd ‘keepers jersey who was stood on the terrace behind his goal.

Needless to say, he left the pitch to a huge ovation.

Used to work with a guy who played for them when I up there. Turned down offers to go professional elsewhere and just played for the love it. Works in the City now in finance
