Agree ... James has to be replaced.
Kirkland would have been my first choice, but he needs regular first team football. Paul Robinson has to be the other in the frame.

Yeah, except I don't give a hoot about either England or Ireland. The one thing I do remember is him speaking to us at York - and he definitely doesn't have an Irish accent. Unless he can put it on at will - I had a schoolfriend like that once.

Fairy nuff.

After all, one of the most famous goals in Irish football history was scored by Ray Houghton, whose Scots accent makes most Glaswegians sound like Terry Thomas by comparison. . .

:D Oops.

Remember, years ago, reading Denis Law's autobiography when he said his worst moment as a commentator was watching a Brighton game and saying something like:
"If Mark Lawrenson keeps playing like this, surely he's got to be considered for the next England squad."

Then wanting to sink into the earth as his producer quietly passed him a note saying: "Mark Lawrenson has won six caps for Ireland". . .

It's not so embarrassing really. Lawrenson apparently discussed his international debut with his dad, who advised him to play for Ireland - perhaps for the exposure and experience. Mullery said "he's as English as black pudding", but due to some quaint and convoluted connection through a great uncle or summat, he could be picked by the Irish.
That was an incredible loss to the England team, and ultimately to Lawrenson as well.

I wish the Irish had qualified Calamity. I really do.

Not to mention that insane charge out of his area in a futile attempt to intercept a ball when we had two defenders covering it anyway. Thankfully John Terry had the presence of mind to give up on the guy he was comfortably shepherding away before James got ionvolved, and instead went to protect the empty gaping goal James had left behind him.

The guy is f***ed in the head. He seems to move in slow motion at free kicks, and that second goal tonight just about took the biscuit (after his earlier "save" with his ANKLES, god help us). Sven is simply not doing his job properly as England manager by continuing to select this disaster waiting to happen. Does any fan in the country actually rate David James ? What is it about him that screams "ENGLANDS NUMBER ONE" ? I must be missing something. Perhaps there's something us mortal football fans simply don't understand about why James is apparently the best keeper England has to offer. What is it ? Or is he simply automatic choice because of his "experience" ?

Someone, please explain it to me. I really need to know. Please.

I'm too angered by james to write the above sort of ttp expression, but it about sums it up for me.

Had far too much confidence in the wall for the free kick by standing almost next to his right-hand post. Good strike but it was a good three feet from the post so he could have got to it.

Not the real one
James has f***ed once too often and in really important games. The rest of the team I'm quite happy with, just that as soon as james cocked up again, England looked rocky and vunerable.

Get that buffoon out of the team now. Questions have to be asked of Englands goal keeping coach, who is it, Lee f***ing Evans?

Completely agree. There is no space for David James in international football. I doubt he'd even make the Azerbaijan first team.
The fact that he got plucked out of the first division with West Ham only because Man City were desperate says much about his lacking ability.
The trouble is that his performances instil no confidence in the rest of the players and if you can't rely on your goalkeeper you're left constantly worrying which is no good for anyone.

Towards the end of his England days I know the great Seaman made a few mistakes but by my reckoning James' various fumbles and balls ups have way exceeded those of Mr Seaman, and with less than half the number of caps to his name.

There can surely be no more excuses, he simply has to go.

It's not even as if he's got time on his side to improve. He's the peak age for a 'keeper and he's still shite. It isn't as if we'd expect him to be in the team for years to come even if he was doing well because he's getting on.

Surely it makes more sense to get the future England goalkeeper in now for valuable experience building up to the tournament's we need him for.

I think that man is Paul Robinson and his performances of late have been promising but it does have to be said that it's very disappointing that we don't seem to have many other choices waiting in the wings. I know Kirkland is a prospect and I'd like to see Robert Green do well but after them... who?

This is the worst thing about Sven - he´d call it loyalty, but he sticks with players who constantly underperform ... last night was one of the most inept goalkeeping displays I´ve ever seen in International football, and the howler was but a small part of it. They had no chances of their own making, and somehow scored twice - James is almost permanently stuck to his line when he needs to come out, and all of a sudden his defenders, covering a harmless attack, turn round to see him going for an aimless sprint upfield. Utter crap - we all knew it was just a matter of time till he did something like this.

GET ROBINSON IN NOW!

Seems a real shame Kirkland's career seems to have ground to a halt at Liverpool as he always looked the most promising of all the young keepers.

Yet they persist with the clown Dudek.

I usually back James, but last night was dreadful, and he doesn't ever seem too bothered about it. Always appears a bit smug when you see him interviewed. I know the free kick last night was decent, but does any other keeper in the world offer quite so much of the goal to the taker??

I mean, he's 6ft 3" or whatever, he should be able to reach most things but persistently positions himself right on one post, thus giving himself no chance of reaching any reasonably placed kick. It's getting a bit repetitive. And I won't even talk about the Austrians' equaliser....
