At the time he was married to said gold-digger, and playing for Pompey in the Prem, he tried to chat up my then (19 year old) secretary.

She was in the SAUNA of her gym / health club after a swim, when he came in, and despite there being nobody else in there, sat himself down directly opposite her.

In response to one of his questions, she asked him what he did, and he replied "I'm David James".

I used to commute to London with a couple of guys who worked for a specialist mortgage company. They charged clients with bed credit ratings about three times the market rate of interest. The idea being clients stay with them long enough to get a decent credit rating and then move on to a more competitive lender. They sort of let slip one day that DJ was one of their clients, which I thought was ridiculous. There again Ian Wright had his old house repossessed when he moved to Arsenal.

It isn't £20M in his hand after employers deduct income tax and NI contributions (apart from his stint at Pompey). He was said to have assets of £6M in 2005 but his missus took half of that in a divorce settlement. Many footballers don't re-adjust their lifestyles as they reach the end of a career or when its over.
Most footballers form ltd companies and then they are not subject to PAYE and NI as employees of the football club. I know Gary Stevens formed Gary Stevens Enterprises when he went to Spurs and that company paid him not Spurs who were invoiced by the company and paid the company.

I thought that loophole was now closed and was only for certain items like image rights, that then had to be proven by shirt sales etc?

That may be so but,

The IR state that you cannot be self employed and work for person or company only but as a pub manager, most are self employed, I beat Rix Kaye solicitors in an industrial tribunal by stating that as a pub manager although self employed I was virtually employed as I was required to be available 24/7 so couldnt work for anybody else and received compensation.

I thought he was pretty clued up, always into the environment, and solar energy etc

Im sure he actually got his car converted to run on vegetable oil down at the cement works in Stenying.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
He's earned all that money and THAT'S how he furnishes his house ? Looks like an elderly couples house. And look at the energy rating - I guess that's where all his money has gone - the leccy bill.
Nice pool though.

I have sympathy for him.

In a world full of yobs like Joey Barton, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole, David James always seemed like a down to earth decent bloke.

Some of the stories in this thread confirm that.

Hope he gets everything sorted out.

He's now auctioning off stuff from his career - plus a customised Astra... - he was worth £20 million at one point. Not quite in the Mike Tyson field of finance-vanishing, but still...

Bury the feckin lead:-

Also being sold is James's customised Astra van and Raleigh Chopper bikes.

How can you be worth £20 big ones and go bankrupt? Sorry but how can anyone feel sorry for him, about 100x the average Joe's net worth
