I'm not sure either - the need (if need there is) would be for an out and out LB should we want to go 4 at the back. Solly and BDB are fine as LWBs, but neither of them is really suited for LB. I've got a feeling that might apply to Karbownik as well.

Tbh I don’t really get the clamour for a new LB. Solly was immense prior to his injury, and Dan Burn is brilliant in his own way.

Forward options are far, far more important to improve.

Yes, as LWBs, not as LBs. There's a big difference! - and if we want to go 4 at the back anything like regularly, we will need a specialist LB (and I'm not sure we've got one in the U23s in that position ready to step up).

re: interpretation that Welbeck will be end of signing forwards this summer. Argus are reporting this today.

"The Seagulls are continuing to look at forwards after seeing target Nico Gonzalez sign for Fiorentina
In terms of further business, The Argus have been told the club are “in no rush to do anything”.
Gonzalez has been described as “one of a number of players” in whom Albion are or were interested."

Well sometimes targets don't work out - and as with Gonzalez , players can choose to go elsewhere but club are clearly briefing journalists that they are "looking".
Not sure Welbeck signing on makes any difference here . Looks like its Welbeck, Maupay + *new signing* , and a 2nd tier of Zeqiri, Andone, Connolly with perhaps 1 or none of those staying as a fourth option. He might keep Zeqiri given he's more flexible (wing back option !!) than the other two.

If we have money and given we bid for Gonzalez I assume we have, and we expect to sell at least one of the 'crown jewels' this window I'd be quite surprised if we didn't break our transfer record this summer. There is so little money around in Europe we'd be mad not to spend this summer if we can. We can potentially pick up talent at a level we normally couldn't and at a discounted price too. Cash is very much king this window our bigger problem may be creating spaces in the squad to fill with new players.

For the sake of the squad we need another striker a new face gives players a lift if they come with a good track record. Maupay needs the pressure release of not being the main man he clearly struggled last season with it. Welbeck has quality that’s for sure yet we all know he isn’t going to manage a full season which is problematic.

If I thought Maupay could hit a premiership barn door then I’d have loved to see them both as our first choices. However, I’m a bit of a pessimist when it comes to Maupay and I’d like to see some of the millions we are purported to be making on at least one of our stars to be invested in someone who could get us 15 goals at least in a season. Maupay third choice maybe.

Problem is we've been looking for 4 years now.

As the U2 song goes 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' or something like that.

Unlikely to happen.

Agreed, I suspect this is the way Tony's viewing things. He's played 'moneyball' for four years in investing more money/quality in the defence rather than big name goalscorers. He's far more likely to go for it in this context. And, I'd add, that France would be where they're scouring availability, given their economic downturn.

I agree and hope it is France, not just because of the financial situation but players from the French league undoubtedly settle better and quicker here than any other league as it is the most similar in style to the Premier League. The success rate of Premier league clubs signing players from France is much higher than anywhere else.

15 goals a season is quite rare. Last season's top scorers:

Pos Player Club Goals
1 Harry Kane Tottenham 23
2 Mohamed Salah Liverpool 22
3 Bruno Fernandes Man Utd 18
=4 Son Heung-min Tottenham 17
=4 Patrick Bamford Leeds United 17
6 Dominic Calvert-Lewin Everton 16
7 Jamie Vardy Leicester 15
8 Ollie Watkins Aston Villa 14
=9 Alexandre Lacazette Arsenal 13
=9 Ilkay Gundogan Man City 13
=11 Chris Wood Burnley 12
=11 Callum Wilson Newcastle 12
=11 Danny Ings Southampton 12
=11 Kelechi Iheanacho Leicester 12
=15 Marcus Rashford Man Utd 11

So, only these guys are good enough for the Albion 2021/22?

1 Harry Kane Tottenham 23

3 Bruno Fernandes Man Utd 18
=4 Son Heung-min Tottenham 17
=4 Patrick Bamford Leeds United 17
6 Dominic Calvert-Lewin Everton 16

Plus how many of these are penalties? As we know they don't count. A quick google tells me that as an example Bruno Fernandes scored 9 Premier League penalties, so he's only got 9 REAL goals.

In fact

Kane 23 goals - 4 pens - 19
Salah - 22 goals - 6 pens - 16
Bruno - 18 goals - 9 pens - 9
Son - 17 goals - 1 pen - 16
Bamford - 17 goals - 2 pens - 15
DCL - 16 goals - no pens - 16
Vardy - 15 goals - 8 pens - 7
