The problem is, lots of centrist people seem to be under the impression that left wingers "supporting" the BBC would make any difference. No, we're totally powerless and illegitimate, the people centrists need to appeal to are the people you spent five years putting into power to defeat us. Good luck!
I'm intrigued that you appear to address me as a centrist based just on that question. Suggests you're spoiling for a fight.

FWIW I supported Corbyn, usually vote Green as I can't stand the New Labour policies of my local MP and cannot stand Keir Starmer or the FBPE luvvies on Twitter.

However how can you possibly look at the situation and think "The left would fare better without the BBC"? Internet news is dominated by right-wing cranks. The print media and commercial TV stations are owned by right wing billionaires. That's where the BBC's general audience would find itself turning.

I don't disagree with many on the left's feelings about certain BBC journalists and programmes, particularly in the lead up to 2019 election. In fact I formally complained about Newsnight twice. But from a pragmatic standpoint the answer is to reform not get rid, not to mention the fact that the BBC is so much more than its political commentary. Those on the left celebrating its possible demise remind me of those that voted for Brexit, which many of my friends did - thinking that free from EU neoliberalism we'd create a socialist paradise rather than hand unconstrained power to a bunch of right-wing sociopaths.

Standby for some exceptionally bold assumptions which I apologise for in advance if I’ve got any wrong.

Now assuming you’re in your 50’s and assuming you probably weren’t a fan of Blair or indeed New Labour ( I know better the devil you know and all that) then pretty much for your entire life you haven’t had the Government you want and indeed put so much passion and leg work to strive for, that must be awful?

You do realise that to be successful as a troll you need to get a timely response from the poster you're trolling

Not at all - the "you" was in connection to the centrists I was talking about, I had no idea what your politics are, it wasn't obvious from what you posted, please don't think everyone is spoiling for a fight with you, even tho that does tend to happen a lot online lol

As it is, I agree that we basically have the same view, regret that public service broadcasting is being ended - but my point is we (the Left, if you are happy to accept that definition) can't influence that anymore, we were silenced by an unholy alliance of Rightwingers and Centrists and their dull obsession with Brexit. The 2019 Labour manifesto had some brilliant proposals to secure future funding of the BBC and safeguard it from political interference. You criticising powerless online leftists who rightly can't stand the biased nature of the BBC news division is utterly pointless, aim your criticism at those who have the actual power

It's surely only awful not to be true to yourself and end up pathetically supporting politics that you know will fail and not do any good? How much of Blair's good work on health and education spending was quickly reversed by successive governments because Blair actually ended up being loathed by voters for all the other shite he pulled? I remain very heartened that the politics I broadly support got the support of 40% of the British public in 2017, I am an optimist at heart and believe voters will respond in similar fashion once given a real political choice again

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever knowingly posted in the Bear Pit, and to think people accuse me of spoiling for a fight :D

Haha! Tory’s already u-turning on their big BBC statement. Surely they couldn’t have just been saying it as a distraction? :wozza:

To some extent I think the distraction point is fair, however this assessment on its own misses the underlying truth about the prevailing position with the BBC.

If the Tories are running this story as a dead cat distraction then it’s because it’s popular with a) its supporters and b) the wider public. This is the reality, if it was unpopular with either a) or more importantly b) they wouldn’t use it as a distraction.

So change is coming, and the BBC is going to have to deal with that change. The BBC are already dealing with a loss of revenue from over 75s, and they are not pursuing non payers now in the criminal courts (rightly so). The consequences of the pandemic has a part to play in this situation but they the days of criminalising non payers is over.

Whether or not the licence fee is retained or replaced with a subscription service/broadband tax the days of BBC largesse are over, not because of the Tories alone but because not enough people are paying the licence fee now……….myself included.

Sorry you aren't getting what you wanted. Again.

Well 3.5 million people over the last two years felt that way and stopped buying a TV licence ,their days are numbered they've failed to keep in touch with the average person

The people of Great Britain will never let the Tory’s tear down the BBC. Hence Johnson reneging on his promises to destroy it.
As an aside, I see also that peers are rejecting many of the proposed points of law in the National Socialist Manifesto, sorry I mean the Protest Bill.
