Yes he was. He gave us a great start to last season, just like Mickey Adams did before he left. Peter Taylor got the championship but Mickey had set us on the way, so he also was a factor that season.

He was a small part, we were four points clear at the top of the table when he left remember.

Yes he left....and there by forfitted the right to claim any credit for our success which we can thank MM and BB for!

He brought Leon Knight in, fighting off QPR to do so. He did leave us at the top of the table, so yes, a small part of it.

Still want to trounce him at Reading in August though. I reckon Mark McGhee is better.

I think the manner in which he left us has pretty much wiped the slate clean, at least for me. I don't feel beholden to him in the slightest, and I don't fall for the "still got a lot of time for Brighton" line he peddles, either.

I am, however, a miserable and bitter old bastard, and this may well colour my views.

this was the sort of response i was expecting!!!

ok granted we were top when he left and he was the reason leon signed but to claim a small part of our promotion is un fair on mcghee afterall coppell left after 12 games and by the time mcghee took over we were in dire straites!!

mcghee deserves all the credit for the way he got us organised and playing to our strenghts

We weren't exactly in dire straights.

The lowest we dropped all season was 8th which wasn't that far off a play off place.

I believe he contributed a huge amount to our success last season. We only got enough points in the bag to get to the play-offs because of the position we were in when he left, which as was discussed on here, was not of his own volition. The club needed the dosh, simple as.

I don't feel disposed to him in any way, and I'd like nothing more than for us to thrash Reading on the opening day, but neither do I feel malice towards him. I believe he is totally genuine about what he says about Brighton, and even if he doesn't get a decent reception from us, neither should he be piloried either......

Interesting to see whilst reading the Coppell comments on the Reading site that they have until 03 July to get their season tickets at the best price. We had to pay for ours by 30 April to guarantee the same seat and sometime much earlier to get them at the best price. Ho hum the limitations of Withdean, pull your finger out Prestcott

High up on the South Downs.
Coppell does indeed deserve some credit. I am not going to be small-minded and boo him. We should leave that sort of thing to the Reading and their on-going obsession with McGhee's decision to move to a bigger club.
McGhee deserves big credit for booting out that tusser Pethick and bringing in Supervirgs.

'Ello Icy... It helps having a nice big stadium yes... a lot of people move seats now to self-generate "singing areas" similar to the "singing" season tickets you have at Withdean. The problem in recent years is the atmosphere change due to reserved seating arrangements in the East stand. We're all moving this year...

Coppell has nothing against Brighton, though McGhee is a strange one for us. He always bangs on about how he gets barracked by the fans all the time and how it actually does upset him. Then he did an interview with a newspaper last year about the Pardew affair and said that Pardew was wrong to go...saying that he'd make the mistake himself and that Pardew should have stayed too. So he's earning his credibility back with some fans.

I think the opening game should be fun. As usual, its impossible to predict how the first game will go as we'll all be unknown quantities with new players, and the effect of two ex-managers is usually also unpredictable, so god knows. As long as we win I don't mind :p

Ah, we didn't mind McGhee going to a bigger club, the problem was:

1) He lied and said he was staying and then just walked out a day later

2) Leicester were almost relegated from the Prem already, and we were 2nd/3rd in Division One at the time.

He had plenty of reasons - still being in Elm Park being one of them! It was the manner that he left that was the problem. We'll be fully behind Coppell you'll see, as was the case with the West Ham game on TV last year. We're good to our managers, less good to those who shaft us.
