Completely RANDOM things about Brighton & Hove...

Wow this pic is a mindblower*. The old Virgin on the corner of Queens rd where Boots is now of course. Next to it is the old dance hall which I think reputedly- according to my mate Mad Terry - had the biggest sprung dancefloor in the country. He said that the middle went up and down 6 inches when everyone was on it. Sounds more like a trampoline but then he is prone to exaggeration.
In those days (mid 70s) I would come down from mid-sussex and with great trepidation go thru the Virgin doors into the darkened interior. Hippies sat around on enormous beanbags earnestly discussing the latest Steve Hillage album. There were sort of orange and green cut-out trees ... all a part of the R. Branson-sponsored madness.
I remember looking through the racks startled by the strange band names "Tangerine Dream", "Henry Cow", "Gong", "Ash Ra Tempel" ?? Who were these people and why didn't I know about them. I probably bought a David Bowie album and then scurried off to WH Smiths where I felt safe.
Anyway - top photo that. If only we had time machines eh? I would go back to the 70s and never return.

* ah the sodding photo didn't copy over - ah well / its on page 1 of this thread about halfway down (or click on that little blue arrow thing by Hunting's name above and it will magically transport u back to the 70s)

Right Here, Right Now
That was a good bit of free entertainment. Must have been cool to actually see it come in.

Did have a quick look but sure it was not there, does anyone remember the cargo on the Athena B?

The bridge over Hartington Road should have been listed, though - the brickwork on that arch was incredible - all sort of diagonal, and an absolute monument to craftsmen's genius!

I remember my parents going garity at us kids up high playing on that as it was being demolished! Health and Safety hadn't been invented then.

Policemen wore white helmets in summer.
Maidstone and district buses -
Southdown Buses
Trolley buses in town centre.

But they will all remember.
So what about Brighton Canoe club at Kings road arches?

The continental? not that i ever went mind

Continentale, Sudeley Place, wasn't really porn, lots of French films with the occasional tit on show.
I remember seeing Saturday Night, Sunday Morning there, previously Whitehawk School took us to see Henry v there.
The Paris cinema in New Road had nudey films, nudist campers playing volleyball etc.

How weird! We were talking about bucket lists tonight and I said I had never seen a proper Shakespeare play- only Henry V at the Continental with the school!

Nobody told me about the Paris though!

Random fact:

The 1964 General Election in Kemptown saw Labour take the seat for the first time, by a margin of just 7 votes. The closest ever local result.

My Mum always told me that herself and the other six members of the family voted Labour.

brighton, actually
trigger..

My Mrs( Ex Plymouth Ave L Bevendean) didnt think the 11 and 12 were blue busses even though that picture is definately a blue one! Certainly the 49 was a blue one!

Anyone remember the theater along the back of the West Pier.

Also Club Papillon under the Royal Albion..

I think 10 & 11 went opposite routes, around Lower Bev.. My dad used to work in the Southdown bus workshop, in Victoria Road, Portslade, before the two firms merged..

I remember seeing Summer Holiday there so it certainly wasn't always porno
