Gamesmanship:

Keeper's facing a penalty will sometimes try to delay the kick being taken as long as possible for psychological reasons. This is conventional wisdom rather than any statistics or evidence indicating that the delay works. It probably depends on the personality of the taker. Sometimes, it may backfire.

I could hardly bear to watch the penalty as I thought Macca would have his penalty saved.

In the days of old, in Muller's day, Peter Ward or Brain Horton would take the penalties depending who felt like it. Most were scored. In Muller's day the set piece plans were exiguous, no special moves, so it would be no surprise the penalties were haphazard. Hard into the corner most of them. I would love it if Albion t had a penalty taker with a le Tessier-like record (98% score rate).

Thanks for that.

It would have been interesting though.. because the ref clearly should have confirmed Kenny was in position before he blew his whistle.

He clearly didn't check (Kenny was cheating obviously) so I wonder if a goal would have been given.

If Kenny hadn't been in his goal and we had taken it it would have been re-taken.

So my answer was 100% correct.

Yes. Sorry If the "no" confused anything, I was saying no to "If the net had been empty, could CMS have just slotted it into an empty net?" I realised when it was too late to edit the answer to the other two questions was yes.

None of CMS's penalties have convinced me so far.. pretty fortunate that 2 have gone in. Surely someone like Orlandi should be able to place it in the top corner. Still, he had a good game overall.

Isn't there some kudos for being highest scorer in the league, so with CMS topping the BHA goalscorers, want's to increase his tally on the division's leaderboard?

Did anyone else notice the weird stuff surrounding the second Brighton penalty last night?

Mason gave it, not a lot of Leeds arguments.

But he made a big point of showing CMS his whistle in the immediate aftermath of giving it.

You often see that with a free kick, meaning the attacking team are not going to take a quick one, they are going to wait for the refs whistle.

But I have never seen it for a penalty before.

So now the ref clears the penalty box and Kenny wasn't in his goal, he was doing the gamesmanship stuff.. having a drink, wiping his hands with a towel.

Then the ref blows his whistle when he's happy the penalty box is clear without checking where Kenny is, because he still isn't in goal!

Kenny then sprints into position and naturally, because he's come from the other side... CMS puts it to his right and Kenny saves it.

What would have happened if CMS had taken it the moment Mason had whistled? Because I'm convinced Kenny wasn't in his goal!

Kenny is an inmense goalie anyway. But yesterday the Seagulls played amazingly, and if they keep on playing like this they are going to be up there by the end of the season. Come on Seagulls!!

I watched the keepers gamesmanship, making CMS wait and thought that when he finally returned to his line that CMS should have repositioned the ball to regain the upper hand. Trouble is, the ref had blown his whistle by then so he would have probably done CMS for handball!

The penalty is not taken until he kicks the ball...it can't be handball before he takes the penalty - of course he could have repositioned it. Or were you not being serious?

Wouldn't be handball, but if the ref feels the player is faffing around he could book him for delaying the restart of the game or for unsporting behaviour, if he chooses.

By now Ref had blown his whistle to take penalty. CMS should have hit it now!
