They were talking about this on Breakfast TV this morning. Apparently we have just four years to drastically change our lives or the world will go into irreversable climate change. This is a substantially shorter time than predicted by previous studies.

I must admit, it did scare me this morning. What can be done? What will be done? And what practical things can be done by the common man - personally I feel powerless at an individual level. Is it time to vote green (after Falmer gets the go-ahead, obviously)?

Well, Sim. Guess thats us f***ed then!

I have just finished reading "The revenge of Gaia" which basically says when there is 500ppm of carbon atoms in the atmosphere then warming will spiral uncontrollably.

Even if we abandon all fossil fuel burning, everywhere on the planet and switch over entirely to nuclear we will still pass this point in the next 5-10years because of the amount of carbon the planet produces through volanoes etc.

Does this mean I can stop paying the mortgage and go on a four yar hedonism binge?

Standing in the way of control
Read The Sceptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomberg if you want a more balanced view - cuts through all the spin and succinctly analyses the true statistic state of things.

Trying to do my bit, have installed a geothermal heat pump. Looking to get solar panels next. Can't do without a car but have traded the old beamer for a smaller more fuel efficient one. I recycle and compost instead of landfill and next year will be getting a polytunnel so that I can use the compost.

And I have chickens, my favourite thing of the whole lot

There's something about this thread which makes me laugh every time it gets bounced - can't work out what it is...
