Civilisation yet to hit Bristol?

What I was more shocked at was the racism from a group of BRIGHTON fans just before half time buying pasties. Even spouting off that Big Ron is their hero as he speaks the truth?!?!??

very sad indeed. [/B]

There was some of that before the game. The women behind the food counter were blatantly incompetent, but it was nothing to do with them being black, it was to do with them being stupid!

A fair few 'Monkey' comments etc from Brighton Fans.

Guys, guys, the only way to stop the gay songs is to humour them.

The chimps who enquire whether boyfriends know we're here would be instantly silenced if we ever came up with a suitably witty response rather than yelling "f***off" and illustrating how bothered we are.

Just like bullies at school, once you remove the incentive for them to do it, ie showing it gets to you, they have nothing else to do, as they lack the requisite number of brain cells to come up with anything better.

"He's over there, he's over there" would perhaps be a better response from us, accompanied by a quick point towards the away fans section. Or, if you were brave enough, a rendition of YMCA (or "B and HA" as I believe someone did at one match this year).

I was too busy laughing at the funny way they speak in Bristol to warrent any sort of abusive or witty response.

What makes you sound more stupid, a Brummy or a West country accent? I just can't make up my mind?

I found that with their accents too. I know they were mostly being abusive (when I walked through the park past a pub, one local was very confident that we'd had a wasted journey- ha ha f*****g ha) but with their accents, you just want them to keep talking, because it's so comical.

I definitely agree with Edna. "B and H A" is a classic! How can we get the arm movements for the 'B'?

It's like Spurs, they were first called 'The Yids' as an insult, a reference to the Jewish population of that area of North London. However they picked up on it and almost gleefully adopted it as a sort of unofficial nickname. I have a mate who's a Spurs fan and it's not unusual for him to start a conversation with"I'm a Yid through and through but .." (followed by some reference to how good Arsenal are or what another disappointing season it's been) - and he's Church of England!

PS - what does he say when Spurs have a good season? I dunno, I've only known him ten years!

re comparisons with racist abuse, if all of us really were gay, then of course the authorities would look into it, as it is genuinely offensive. The fact is that the majority of Brighton fans aren't gay, so what have we got to worry about? We sang at least an equal number of songs about them being sheep shaggers and Welsh (both of which were shite in my opinion, pointless songs), both equally inoffensive as the City fans probably aren't welsh and into bestiality, why not just sing songs about them having a crap team that couldn't score if their life depended on it?.
Racism is different because it is actually directed at black people. If they sang racist songs directed at an entirely white crowd would anyone care or be offended - I think not.

Brovian- same with Ipswich and the farmer chants. Now they call themselves the tractor boys and the chant is rendered pointless to opposition fans.

So what, you're suggesting we re-named ourselves the Queer Boys?

Can't see that taking off somehow, despite the reasoning behind it. :lolol:
I was thinking something more along the lines of the Gaymen or the Pink Panthers. Poof Posse perhaps?

To be honest its really not worth getting on your high horse about the usual gay taunts. For every Albion fan who might find it distasteful you have to remember there are probably an equal number who gleefully join in the sheep shagger chants.

You can't have it both ways and the best way to deal with it is to just laugh it off. The best reaction i've seen from some Albion away fans was to blow them kisses when the home fans launched in to the gay taunts. That ability to take the piss out of themselves soon shut the home fans up.

Sorry lammy I thought you were a shirt lifter:lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

The only bit of banter I had came from one bloke who , when I was sitting on the wall outsidfe KFC said to me..." there's one of yours"....I said "what" and he pointed to a low flying seagull. My how we both chuckled.

Bristol is not a pleasant place anyway ( I lived in Wiltshire for 2 years) and I would certainly not want to socialise with the inbred sheepshagging, cow worrying lowlife. Does that make me " bristolist"?

BTW the girls before the game who were prancing about in the centre circle were shite! Having watched many a WinterGuard/ Drum Core UK competition, I have seen better cadets perform the sort of routine they did.:drink: :drink: :drink:

a question for you all

is the reason that we dont adopt a clever response/ownership of the insult because quite frankly there's a little homophobia in many of us too? i'm not homophobic in the sense i believe in discrimination etc, BUT when my reading supporting flatmate gets into banter mood he knows damn well that the boyfriend taunts are the best because (a) we've no decent retort and (b) not many straight males want to turn the joke on themselves and call themselves gay!

but when you consider that cardiff are now proud to consider themselves sheep shaggers (!!!) then isn't about time we put this one to bed, came up with a decent response and live with it.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. There's no problem with the home end baiting our end with gay taunts, that's to be expected and all part of the game.

What was objectionable were the dumb fucks who targeted us for homophobic abuse away from the ground and at the station. For instance, I had a conversation with a couple of Bristol boys after the match. Quite amiable until they decided we didn't deserve Falmer cos 'we're all a bunch of poofs' and 'I bet you'll be taking it up the arse when you get home. All said with pure vitriol - and in front of my wife!

To be honest I wasn't really that bothered but I take The Large One's point about Bristol being uncivilised.

Willow - if you're going to judge Bristol on the lowlifes who follow Bristol City then you're falling into the same category of idiot who makes sweeping generalisations based upon completely misfounded stereotypes. i live in Bristol and thoroughly love it up here, great city. and as a city it's got a mix of people, most decent, some not so.

those type of comment are for the terraces, as you said yourself

Didn't mean to be negative about Bristol, I could live there quite easily too. We spent some time before the game at the White Lion Hotel up by the suspension bridge. Very nice around there.

All in all a great day out and I hope we're in the same division next season.

Fair comment about Spurs, they turned they "yid" insult on its head by singing "we are the yids" and adopting the Israeli flag as their own.

Perhaps we should either ignore the taunts as puerile nonsense or in the best traditions of the Albion come up with some suitable response, there are few teams in my experience with such a wide range of witty songs as ourselves so surely it can't be beyond us.
