Recently purchased a chicken sandwich from a well-known supermarket (who has adopted our blue and white striped pattern for their carrier bags!) .. to discover that the chicken contained therein originated from Thailand!!

Do we not 'grow' chickens in this country anymore then? I don't get it!

I am, disgusted from Tunbridge Wells

Most "food service" chicken here is Brazilian despite nearly one entire county being covered in chicken farms. I'd imagine its the same for the UK just with Thai. People are eating more of it than can be produced domestically and rarely check where its coming from except when buying it as a raw product in supermarkets. ALL the raw chicken in supermarkets here is ROI or NI but the chances of a chicken sarnie having that is nil.

I didn't realise until half way through the first 'triangle'. The rest went straight in the bin and NEVER again will I be darkening their chicken doors again! Disgraceful.

Those four words are not often combined in a sentence in that particular order!
Indeed not. But, if we left the EU, the "free market" enthusiasts who want out of Europe would no doubt contrive to ensure that practically all chickens consumed in the UK came from Thailand or Brazil.

It's a no brainer really....chickens sourced from outside the E.U. cost less to produce because they can get round those pesky animal welfare standards, and, labour and feed costs are less. So, you can grow 27 chickens in 1 cubic Metre in Thailand in 6 weeks for about 50p.
It does not matter if they never see sunshine or run on grass and spend most of their day being crapped on from above. This means that certain supermarkets can consistently produce year on year growth of 5% + and , yet, maintain customer satisfaction. Meanwhile, staff are underpaid, undervalued and over stressed while City investors continue to regard them as a blue chip company.

Beware, see the film Soylent Green, and be afraid.

Maybe all their British-grown chicken was burnt in that fire in Tunbridge Wells Tesco the other day. Anyway, Thai chicken is probably better, at least they offer you some "cluckie cluckie"

This is very common in sandwiches and in ready meals. Best not think about animal welfare and low wage workers, whilst you consume a meal you could probably have put together from scratch in about 20 minutes yourself, with a little effort.

Isn't the Far East the home of bird flu too?

Buy your sandwiches from Sainsbury's, they sport a little Union Jack proudly declaring they contain British chicken. Of course, what the legal definition of British chicken is is up for discussion.
