What winds me up is that most people 'celebrating' her death are under 30 and are just jumping on a bandwagon. She dragged the country into the modern era but people trot out the same couple of arguments, "created lots of unemployment", "closed the mines". Question them further than that and they haven't a ****ing clue what they're talking about.

Whether you like it or not they are entitled to an opinion and we are all living through the ramifications of her choices.

I'm in my forties and lived in Liverpool in a working class area during the Thatcher era mate. What winds me up is southern aspirants who made pots of cash and started Britain off on the debt mountain roller coaster in the 80s while the north got ****ing raped.

It was mad. I left Merseyside in 1986 and moved back to Sussex. The South was filthy with money, I was a plasterers mate earning £200 a day! Up north though it had turned into a horrific nightmare for millions.

If you were in the southern building trade, estate agency, or involved in stocks and shares you got wealthy very fast...the working classes up north who were bred to work in heavy industry suddenly found themselves on the scrap heap, under skilled and very very angry. You have to see why she is so hated by those she chose to ignore in the " no such thing as society" rush.

She was an ideologue and a very strong leader but she was quite prepared to destroy the fabric of the working class to reform Britain. The pain was immense. It has led us directly to where we are now in a total greed driven economic nightmare.

I think it's in poor taste, but she ruined a generation of people's lives through her bullying ideology, so I don't have a problem with it.

Excuse me. That's the most prattish comment I've seen on NSC tonight (and with pro- and anti- Thatcher posts there have been a lot). Those of us who remember the Thatcher era are a lot more likely to be opposed to it than youngsters who were kids at the time - we experienced what was going on, and it wasn't for the benefit of the country.

And if you're going to question my credentials as an observer of the terrible things that were happening then, I was working in Jobcentres (Benefit Offices as they were called back then) at the time. Been there, seen it, done it, sunshine...........don't accuse me of jumping on a band wagon. If there IS a band wagon, I would have helped to build it.

Will someone please explain why the fact that the Iron Lady had 'family' and was "an old lady" is a reason not to be happy she's gone? Just because you've given birth and grown old is irrelevant when it comes to debating if she herself was a disgusting person. If breeding gave you immunity from being accountable for what you've done then 90% of people could do what they liked...........Doesn't Rose West have relatives? I spose when she dies we should say 'Ah poor old Rose, shame she burried all those people in her garden, but she's someone's Mum....' (am not suggesting Rose West and Thatcher are in the same league - after all Rose West only ruined a handful of lives - but it's the principle........)

A very fair post, from one who witnessed both ends of Thatcherism. Yeh, it made some people rich (there were those who didn't even realise that 'Loads of Money' was a caricature!) but much damage was done to many people.

1. Mrs T didn't lay the foundations for the internet, it evolved from Arpanet/Darpanet.
2. The GPO always had provisions for people to have more than one phone (up to 6 in a standard installation, more if required but needed a ringing converter)
3. BT was a founding partner in TSCR which evolved into Cellnet then O2
4. Average speed in France is 17.03Mb, a mere 1700% error (in the UK it is 20.05Mb which probably reflects the UK being a smaller country and a more urban environment)

Other than that though, a very well informed post.

I've read some informed posts and some ill informed posts on both sides since yesterday but the notion that Thatcher somehow paved the way for the Internet is absolutely hilarious. And having just skyped my Dad in rural France it seems his dodgy socialist connection is.....just as fast as mine.
