Caldwell Deal Looks Unlikely

From tonights Argus (I've had to bloody well type this)

Albion manager Mark McGhee today played down the possibility of making Scottish centre half Gary Caldwell his first signing of the summer.

McGhee confirmed a report that he is interested in the 22 year old, who is expected to decline a long-term deal with Hibs.

But with limited funds available to strengthen his squad for the coca cola championship, McGhee wants to set most of it aside for his strike force.

Mc Ghee said:

"Gary Caldwell is one of the players I am considering. I have spoken to his agent, but I would say it unlikely we would sign him. He is a footballing centre half who would give us the option to play with three centre backs if we wanted to, but I am not sure we can afford to commit any of the very little money we have on anything but strikers"

Cannot believe MM does not see midfield as the priority... you csn have the best strikers in the world, but if they never see the ball, then they will not score... :( :( :(

If he is looking at this Caldwell and has offered Cullip a new 2 year contract what does that mean about Blackwell? Does it mean that after paying his wages for a year he is not likely to comeback?

I think Chippy & Reid will be first choice midfielders next season with Harty & Jones on the wings. We'll then have back-up with Charlie, Piercy, Hammond etc. My feeling is that he wants to give Hammond & Piercy the chance to prove themselves. Not sure if that's good or not.

We do need a striker - Iwelumo isn't good enough.

Who posted last week that they had seen Blackwell having a meal somewhere and he told them that he wouldn't be at the club this season?

Lets face it we are crying out for Strikers as well.
We have to score goals to stay up.
And if we by-pass midfield like we did last year then why by them.

Keep the Faith MM knows what he is doing, hes very experienced in this division. I wouldnt read too much into those comments.

With Blackwell fit we have 3 good centre halfs anyway. So he can still play that way if he wants.

It wouldn't surprise me. He had to see the specialist again last week as his operation went well but every time he tried to train his knee swelled up again.

Blackwell is likely to never be the player he was, hes been out for a whole season and was released by Wimbledon previously because he was knackered. Add another player to the list that we need!
