Pork pie land.
France just banned the wearing of burkas by an overwhelming vote. Belgium is fast to become the next to ban them. Do you think England should follow suit? I'd post a pole but don't know how. I'd be very interested to hear/read NSCers opinions.

Cheers

Good for them. With their historical problems with arab imigrants it should lead to some problems with enforcement.

If I wore an obviously Nazi swastika t-shirt would I be arrested?

I would bet most in this thread would do a 180 on their arguments.

The burka is a symbol of orthodoxy wich implies a literalist/extremist view of Islam. You dont see women in burkas on pride marches and no doubt when asked they would hold some interesting view on liberation.

To me it says "I am a wahibi sympathising extremist". I remember at uni it was the extremists in hizb- tihr(Or however its spelt) who wear that get up, in a group seperate from males of course. Secular muslim women tend to wear western clothes.

The age of religous tolerance is comming to an end in britain, we have Labour to thank for that. To them all muslims look the same, therefor any critisism falls under the umbrella of "Islamaphobia".

I think we need to start rooting out the extremists and booting them out.

Hasidic jews are pretty literalist and extreme in my opinion.
The reasons put up for banning it so far on this thread are ...
secuity in banks
driving
teaching.

The very nature of Islam would negate a woman going to a bank..especially on her own. Her father, or brother or husband would be responsible for the transactions. That may upset some wesstern peoples sensibilities, but thats all...
Seems like some of the people putting womens rights up there are some of the same people who degrade the PC Britain.

Security at airports... no problem there. If you have been to Heathrow in the last few years, you would have noticed the Islamic dress code (minus veil) of the security people working there, checking the security.
How difficult would it be for a muslim security officer at Heathrow to check a Muslim woman traveller?

Driving? Who has seen a veiled woman driving a car?

Teaching? Have any veiled teachers been teaching in the UK?

and if I see some people on this board rabbitting on about muslims consistantly, then yeah...ill say islamophobia.

and as for Atturturk on the other post... whipped the British, French and the ANZACS in battle... proppa nawty geezer.

Burqas are a symbol of an alien culture, so are mosques. It's Islams way of oppressing the women of their culture. What bothers me most is it's these same people who when they immigrate to another part of the world,do not integrate with the society.Whether it's Western or Anglo.Instead they impose their culture upon us.That's not right. If I were to immigrate somewhere, say like Japan, I'd be good goddamn sure I learnt the culture and language and adhered to them before I put both boots on their soil.Take a look around you, countries like Belgium,France,Turkey are getting it right I hope soon that England does follow suit.

*opps, there I go again* :bla:

Umm, I lived and worked in the Netherlands for about six years, living in an international community that had plenty of Brits in it. I can confirm that the majority of the British people made no attempt whatsoever to integrate or even mix with the local Dutch people, few if any could speak more than a couple of words of Dutch. If you ever saw fighting in the local pubs it almost always involved British people...so much for integrating and absorbing the local culture!

The British are very good at this sort of behaviour, we seem to have made an art of it, seems somewhat hypocritical to level the same accusation at others.

Your right Gully.I've seen more than my share of Brits behaving badly world wide,it's disgraceful and embarrassing to me as an Englishman. However,it's not only us. All this multi-cultural bollox has ruined everything and the politicians using it for political leverage is sickening.
Mind your boots mate, I may have just spewed on them, :bla:

This makes for interesting reading. This guy banned burkas. Then again I may just be spewing shit again. :bla:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/ataturk_kemal.shtml

You're not wrong, but Ataturk not only banned the burka, he banned the headscarf as well; an argument that goes on to this day. Kemal Ataturk was (in my opinion) one of the great men of history. I'm sure he wouldn't have had a very high opinion of Dave In Prague. How can you compare the religious symbol, the turban, which doesn't conceal the face, with the cultural practice of wearing the burka, which does cover the face?

He also slaughtered the Christian Armenian population of Turkey. Would I care about his opinions? Not really.
Like you say, the arguments go on till today, which suggests a sizeable amount of people want it.
The Sikh point was in response to Islam being an alien culture to Britain.

Haven't read all thread but should we ban them. I err on the side of saying yes, they should be banned, This is Britain and we don't repress women here so why should we tolerate this archaic form of repression. Do Muslim birds like wearing them? I dunno.

The BNP got their arses handed to them in the general election! It was a crushing defeat for the right-wing so dont talk shit.

In elections where some form of proportional representation is used, fringe parties excel. The first-past-the-post system marginalises them, a fact which advocates of the system use in debates on the merits of electoral reform.

A large percentage of the BNP vote switched to the Conservatives so it wasn't really a crushing defeat for the right wing after all.

A western society has no right to ban anything. Are we living in a facsist state here? This country is free to some people I suppose and should continue to allow freedom of expression.

Interesting view, what about smoking in pubs? Adults used to be able to partake of tobacco as they saw fit and it used to be perfectly legal, now its BANNED.

Ironically this would have been a likely consequence had we lost WW2.

So in this regard, yes we are living in a fascist state.

Sieg Heil.

Damian Green [immigration minister] says burka ban would be 'un-British' ... to pass such a law would be at odds with the UK's "tolerant and mutually respectful society".

quite right. im glad the government arent intrested in playing up to this silly little debate.
