And that's only because I know the landlord, it should be 750 pcm which I could never afford inc bills!

With all due respect, if you're working 13 hour days to find £500 a month you're going to be struggling to pay the associated costs with having your own place to pay for. I pay £650 a month mortgage for a two bed flat in Burgess Hill. Even if your plan got an equivalent place down to say £300 a month there can be other substantial costs that come with owning your own place.

That's before mentioning the economic nightmare that would be created if we all of a sudden built a huge amount of housing (people already paying mortgages in the homes they are in become trapped due to the devaluation of house prices.)

So many problems would be solved if this was done - more houses, more schools, more hospitals and of course a heck of a lot more JOBS! There'll still be PLENTY of countryside to enjoy, times have changed, I'd rather live in a affordable house then stare at an empty field!

Are you Prescott in disguise :wanker::facepalm:

In 2013 there were officially 635,127 empty homes in the UK, but the actual statistic is closer to 845,000.

Destroying our precious countryside is not an option, it is pretty obvious what really needs to be done.

Why isn't it being done!?

what first needs to be done is justify and put context around those stats. last time i heard a stat about the number of homes empty in London specifically, it turned out to be double the real number and even then didnt take account of those that noone is registering on the electoral roll. how many of those 845k are counted in the rows and rows of semi-derelict terraces in northern cities? how many are in development? how many are second homes? simple market forces tell us that habitable houses in areas people want/need to live are not empty for long.

We need a socialist revolution,

history tells us that the socialist solution will be to box us all up in 10 story high rises. which of course no one will own, we'll all be renting. the people have said that dont want that.

We need a socialist revolution, things aren't going to get any better until we do, only worse. Presuming you are in your early 20's, chances are you will never own your own home and the same applies for most of your generation. Everyone needs to be more proactive politically, particularly your generation - people need to unite and fight for basic rights such as job security, the right to own a home and so on. Proposing to destroy our precious environment and make the bourgeoisie even more money is exactly what they want, and won't makes things any better for you, or any of us.

I can actually see a revolution happening in the near future but unfortunately I think it'll be a lot like the riots we saw here a while back but instead of a bunch of yobs it'll be huge groups of fed up and frustrated citizens from my generation and those below me.

Well funnily enough there is a party that wants to protect British jobs, wants to make housing easier by stopping mass immigration, wants to stop 78% of the decision making of our country by unelected faces in other countries etc. Unfortunately although this party has many black asian and other ethnic candidates......they are deemed as racists.

Soulman--If I believed that my vote would change a thing I would use it.
My kids are 14/21/24/29 and they will all have to move away from Brighton to get a chance on the property ladder---one has already to Tarring.
Until councils prioritise housing for the people that have got off their backsides and worked for a living we are all fecked.
I like a green field as much as the next bloke but if all my kids were able to afford their own places that is more important to me.
If its on a brownfield site then great - but they tend to be £250.000 places.

I was 24 in 1979, born and bred in Brighton and a qualified carpenter when I got married.
I moved to Hailsham, because the total that the Building Society would lend me and my intended was 14k, 2.5 times our income. That would get nothing in Brighton in 79, they hadnt even sold council houses then.
So I moved to Hailsham, bought a Victorian 3 storey semi for 15k, struggled like f**k to start with, but am now mortgage free and have the same 5 bed, 3 storey that is worth over 300k.
So the OP needs to move away from Brighton, plumbers earn good money, knuckle down and it gets easier as the years go on.
Building loads of new houses wont solve his problems, houses wont get cheaper, unless all tradesmen, plumbers included, drop their rates of pay.
This means you wont earn so much, so you wont be able to afford to buy anyway.

never going to happen as it would result in house prices crashing through the floor, the banks would lose billions

to revisit this, i've found the apparent source: a lobby group that guesimate the 845k to include uninhabital properties ( the 635k official number accounts for this). And this number is those empty for under 6 months. empty for over 6 months is 232600, a third. and this doesnt address the many aforemention reasons for a home being considered empty.

Yes,your'e socialist revolution handled the economy quite well when in power didn't they. Why do you look at 'What's in it for me' instead of 'What is best for the country' as a whole. But you are entitled to your views. FWIW I agree we should not destroy our green belt countryside.

No disrepect, but you and Simmo always go on about how much work you have.
Ive been in the building since 1972, and have never met a poor plumber or sparks.
If you are doing 13 hr days, you should be earning at least £200/day.

There is no doubt that we need many more houses however even if they are built who are going to be offered first choice??????????????
Clue, our housing lists would still be the same length.

So we are overcrowded, but you want to build more houses, thus encouraging more people and more overcrowding.

Locally the answer is to build up not out. King Alfred and Hove bus station, would both make great locations for quality high rise starter homes. This isn't the 1960's anymore, these things work.
