Thanks for the thoughts everyone.
Been there two and a half years, so should get statutory minimum at least - knowing them that's what I'll get, so that's not going to be a lot - £420 or has it gone up? (was £210 for each full year of service?)

I think the consultation period is 90 days if over a certain number of people are going in one go; I think we're talking just a handful here, so I think my consultation period is only 2 weeks; then I'll have a month's notice.

Will know more tomorrow, when I have my first (go through the motions) meeting with HR.

I'm an IT Project Manager in case anyone knows of any positions available! ;)

Seriously thinking of going contract, but going to tap a friend of a friend who works for a Recruitment Agency to see what the market is like.

This is the fourth time I've been made redundant in the last 12 years or so; have I upset someone upstairs or what? :)

Just gone out and bought a few beers; shall enjoy them tonight!

consultation notice is 3 months if the people at risk number over 100 one month if the number between 21 and 100 and a reasonable period of individual consultation if under 20. reasonable could be as little as 2 weeks if its only a few people.

Consultation has to be meaningful. which is pretty broad but it means more than saying "were going to do it no matter what you say". they also should state their reasons for why they are looking at redundancies. there are 3 main (pretty broad) reasons. Economic, Technical or Organisational reason.

Statutory redundancy pay if you are aged 21 -40, is a week a year for every complete year after 2 years service. 41 and over is a week and a half for each complete year over that age. there is also a cap of £430 per week (last changed in January 2012). From what you've said you'd be entitled to £860 payment tax free plus a taxable months notice, unless aged 41 or over. in which case you're entitled to 3 weeks x £430 tax free plus a months taxable notice, unless you're earning less than £430 pw.

If the employer goes bust the DWP becomes responsible for the payment.

if not everyone who is at risk is made redundant, there has to be a fair selection procedure. If you need more info pm me.

Two weeks ago, I, along with 60 others were told that we will be made redundant next April 2013. I am gutted but also grateful that we have time to think about things. Many people are made redundant with only weeks notice, some even on the same day.
I have been offered a good redundancy package which includes a good retention bonus.
I shall stay til the end and in an ideal world will walk straight into another job so i can enjoy the redundancy pay, but I doubt that will happen.

I am trying to stay positive, but it is very difficult, especially as a manager who has to try and motivate 60 odd staff who are also going to lose their job.

The last couple of days have been hard and it is difficult not to feel down but I will try and keep my head up.

I've been made redundant literally today.

Been employed by this company for nearly 2 years.

Not going to say on here exactly what I do, but I was expected to do 110 jobs per day average. Over the last 8 months I averaged 200 a day, naively thinking that hard work would mean I would be safer in my job, or maybe even raise my chances prospects of promotion. I had 100% attendance & punctuality, never been disciplined or damaged or lost the companies very expensive equipment - but they let me go, just like that.

Not expecting to find work any time soon. The nature of employment is f***ed, the worlds economy is f***ed - I hope it collapses soon so all those greedy bastards who own & "run" the big companies get shafted as much as everyone else is at the moment

i'm with you here mate, the whole system is f***ed,
we all seem very dispensable at the moment, and loyalty and hard work seem to count for not a lot these days, where once it made you feel good and appreciatted at work.
the current catchphrase amongst bosses at the moment seems to be, "just remember, there's not many jobs out there", anytime i have a valid moan up about the crap i have to put up with day in day out.
interesting debate about the public sector on question time at the moment...
good with everything tho, keep your head up and stay positive, .....and f*** 'em all.....

I sympathize with your situation, where I work all the staff have been told that we have to work harder etc etc and as such, none of us have had a pay rise for about 4 or 5 years now. With inflation over that time it means we have had a real decline in earning power of about 20%.. yet somehow, those at the top seem to prosper ?

No doubt you will be replaced with someone on the same or slightly lower wages than yourself and they will be told that they are lucky to have the job and that if they prove themselves there could be more money in it for them if..... and so on. I can see a revolution coming before too long.

THIS!
bring it on!
i have been calling for one since the early 90's, with the criminal justice bill...
now's the time
the time is now......

I know a lot of people here: Legal General - Job - Project Manager

Get on Linked In. Look for Lynn Morris, she is usually recruiting in IT there. If you want, PM me and I can set up an introduction for you.

I thought they did it for the holidays?

I hope you were saying that tongue in cheek. Like the previous poster, I have a wife who is in education, has an extremely realistic attitude about pensions and the like, and is very limited in when she can take her holidays, like many other teachers who take such things as A level, GCSE results, support of their students and so on seriously.

If people hold the stereotype of teachers clearing off to the South of france or whatever at the last bell on the last day of term and not coming back until the day before the next term starts, those teachers who do that will not have much respect from their colleagues, from their management, probably from their children either, will not do very well and will be found out by the inspection system.

Decent teachers who do well work f###ing hard to get there.

If only you could get a job in the public sector so you could listen to the General Secretary of Unite wittering on about an incremental change to the precise thickness of the gold plating on your pension.

such insight and razor sharp humour. irrelevant to the OP's point and a rather witless snipe at people in the public sector.
