Much as I love Rory Gallagher, I am still suspicious that there doesn't appear to be any actual evidence or record of Hendrix ever saying this.

Yes it sounds apocryphal to me. But, I am not sure it matters much. Both Hendrix and Gallagher's legacies have lived on with anyone who has listened to their music and then gone and picked up a guitar.

One of the nice things about punk (British) was that nobody went on about musical virtuosity.

I have heard a story (I think it was a recorded interview with Robert Fripp, but he was describing something he was told about rather than saw himself) about Hendrix jumping around a club with a broken arm, so excited by hearing King Crimson live for the first time.
Based on the sort of music he recorded himself, I can well believe he loved In The Court Of The Crimson King.

To be fair to Hendrix, he did seem interested in music in the wider sense. I saw some film a few years ago of his later work as a band member with at least 5 people, contributing in an unstated way to making organic music rather than going on a virtuoso head-wank (sort of Robin Trower career trajectory in reverse). So maybe he did like King Crimson and that. Sorry 'dig'. Dig King Crimson.

Bored during a meeting today, I pulled out all my 7 inch singles. Punk (and reggae) singles took my interest from around 76 but I stopped buying singles entirely by 83. Not much American (shit) there Apologies if the past below is too big for your phone. I have blocked each year into alphabetic order. I think that if you squint you can see punk transition into 'New Wave' or (my preferred terms) 'alternative pop music' over time. I haven't listed all the soul music, early 60s trash pop. or any of my massive 12" singles collection. Something for another time. @Tom Hark Preston Park, just shut it, OK?

Strange thing to say. Sounds like faux modesty to me, or some sort of blurt. Gallagher didn't hit his stride till some years after 1970. Irish tour, 74. And even then....not even the best Irish guitarist for

I'm almost certain that Hendrix will have seen Gallagher live either in a club in London or at a festival somewhere (pretty sure Taste played the IoW in 1970, also pretty sure Hendrix wouldn't have been sat around watching their set).
I have some doubts that he ever actually said that line about Gallagher being the best guitarist in the world.
I have no doubt at all that if he did say it he didn't mean it literally.

I saw them at De Montford Hall, Leicester in '78 or '79. First time I heard Gloria. I didn't find out for many years that it was a Van Morrison song.

Good question. The independent labels were regarded (rightly or wrongly) as indicative of authenticity. If it was on a major label it was treated with suspicion. But most importantly, if you were browsing and came across a new release on a label you knew had released stuff you'd bought and liked, you might be more likely to risk your 70p. For me. Step Forward, Rough Trade and Beggars Banquet were promising (as was Sire, an American lable), but Stiff had a lot of recycled pub rockers (among gems like Elvis Costello) so a bit more caution was in order. 70P was a lot of money in 77.

Didn't fancy starting another thread but I heard the dreadfully sad news today that Geordie Walker of Killing Joke passed away this morning after a stroke. Probably the most influential post punk guitarist of them all. RIP.
