More interestingly, how was Cox tonight?
If Martot did well enough to earn his place back, that only leaves room for him OR Jake R.

Cox was back to his best tonight in the sense he was here there and everywhere.
He would have to get the nod over Jake on that perfomance. He also seems to give us a better balance than when Jake was in.
Bring Robbo off the bench with 15 to go on saturday for a breakaway third to clinch the game.

Regarding Nathan Elder -

I like him, he just seems to lack a bit of self belief. He's clearly doing something right to be scoring for the stiffs and at Cheltenham last season he was quality, they couldn't handle him. Last night he flattered to deceive - he looks like he should be big and strong but he's just not. He did very well in the build up to the second goal - held it up well and laid it off to Martot(?) for the ball in. We need to see more of that. He looked last night as if he was just waiting for his number to be displayed to be subbed off.

He's a good option to have in the squad - an option we can afford to have because Forster looks like scoring more and Bas and Revell can support him easily.

The thing with Elder is, although he couldnt hit a barn door last night, he was actually getting himself into the right positions. As previously stated i think its just a matter of self belief.

That said Forster was superb last night & deserving of his MoM champagne

Apart from the 2 misses Elder also had a bullet header blocked by the defence. The point is that he's getting into positions to score and it won't be long before he is. I did think he was about to have a Gazza moment just after he'd missed the cross in the second half though.

Was it at that point that someone in E block shouted 'Taxi for number 21'? (a bit harsh I thought).

He's much better with his head than with his feet. He did get in the positions to score... and you could maybe write off one such awful miss.. but two or three in one game? The chances he had you'd expect any professional or semi-professional footballer to put away. I just can't work out how he didn't score.

Elder did have a stinker regarding his finishing, and he didn't seem capable of standing up during the first half, but I think we all know he's better than that.

What also worried me was straight after his second miss, his head dropped, his shoulders dropped and he looked a bit lost and forlorn. For me, it should have been the captain's place (or at least one of his team-mates) who should have geed him up - don't worry about it and all that. But no-one did. Not good.

Thankfully, he came back with that bullet header that was well blocked. I think that little black cloud might have disappeared if that had gone in.

People need to remember Elder is 20, has only been in professional football for little over a year and has LOTS to learn.

With that in mind he is a good place as is demonstrated by the progress of our other 'youth' players who have progressed rather nicely under the guidance of a certain Mr. D. Wilkins.

Furthermore if you listened to him last night you would realise he is learning both form the management and players such as Mr. N Forster. His attitude is excellent and it takes time turning raw talent into real talent.

He may or may not come good but at the moment he is going in the right direction.

Is he? To me he doesn't seem to have progressed an awful lot since he first signed. His touch and control still look poor, although he scores often for the reserves he also misses a lot for them too.

really don't get the calls last night from the south stand for Wilkins to get Elder off, thought he had a good game gave the defence lots to think about and caused chaos at corners. Very unlucky with the chances half a second late into the area. Hope he gets another chance on Tuesday.

The highlights of the game for me were the performances of Forster who showed his class but was up against probably the worse central defenders in this division.

O Callaghan who showed that he is a better player having Fraser to win the ball for him rather than Hammond idling his way through the game, trying to copy O'Cs game.

Cox and Martot both looked comfortable and well in control as did Richards who seems to improve with every game.

EL Abd had a satisfactory game at right back and I would expect him to be right back on Saturday.

Elder tried hard but is obviously naive about his positioning and had it been Forster or Robinson in the positions that he got in we would have had 2 or 3 more goals. He will improve by playing more games whether or not to the required standard is another thing.

The disappointments were Butters and Lynch. Lynch showed he is obviously not fit and Butters showed that he was 'match rusty' Perhaps this season is going to be one too many for Butters unless he gets a run of games under his belt. I do not think that anybody expected Elphick to be such a resounding success which has put increased pressure on Butters.

Kuipers did his usual but complacency has crept in with him as he knows that he is the first name on the team sheet because we have nobody else to take his place. Made 1 good save in the last few minutes and a number of misses during the game including one attempted punch when he was 3 yds away from the ball and flapping at air.

Next round anbody at home or away except a trip to Swanse as we need to play them, over 2 legs to beat them, the others we can beat away and be favourites at home.
