Steve Bruce is set to blood his summer signings in Sunderland's second round Carling Cup clash at Brighton.
Bruce has signed 10 players over the close season but has not been able to give all of them minutes in the Premier League.
However, the cup will provide him with an opportunity to give them experience of playing for their club in a competitive match against good opposition.
The Seagulls have made a seamless transition to the Championship from League One as they have gleaned 10 points out of a possible 12.
Debut
Bruce will hand Keiren Westwood his debut and provide the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper with a platform to stake a claim for a first-team place.
First choice keeper Simon Mignolet was at fault for Ryan Taylor's winner against Newcastle in the derby and a good performance from Westwood on Tuesday could put him contention for a start against Swansea on Saturday.
David Vaughan and Craig Gardner are also poised to start their first games for the club having been among the cluster of summer buys.
Phil Bardsley is suspended for the trip south having been sent off against Newcastle. John O'Shea (hamstring) and Craig Gordon, Fraizer Campbell and David Meyler (all knee) are still not fit.
Backlash
Brighton boss Gus Poyet, however, has warned his troops of a backlash from his visitors but he will be confident of producing a shock.
The Championship club are awaiting international clearance from the Welsh FA to see if they can play Ryan Harley who they signed from Swansea. If they get it, the winger will be handed his debut.
Strikers Will Buckley (hamstring) and Will Hoskins (hip) missed Saturday's 2-2 draw with Blackpool and are doubtful for the clash.
Kazenga LuaLua played 20 minutes on Saturday after a hamstring injury and will be in contention for a start.
