Bridcutt Close to Signing for Sunderland? (Sky Sports News)

You know, I really hate the phrase 'we're not a selling club anymore'. I hear it banded around all over the place but what does it mean? Only that we don't need to sell to cover debts, but not that we can refuse to sell anyone. 99.9% of clubs are selling clubs and there is no way of getting round it. West Ham are bigger than us but had to sell Ince, Lampard, Carrick. Saints had to sell Shearer, Bale, Walcott. In turn Tottenham couldn't hang on to either Carrick or Bale long-term. Everton couldn't keep Rooney. Newcastle had to let Cole go. Arsenal eventually sold Fabregas, van Persie, Nasri to bigger clubs. When Ronaldo wanted out of Man United he was gone.

All clubs are selling clubs, the players ultimately dictate where they play

Its not always a "bigger" club either. When Nasri left arsenal to go to man city they weren't bigger in terms of recent success they just had more money (or perhaps were prepared to spend more) to pay him in wages.

bridders is just what they need to avoid the drop???

He will never win you a game, his strength is helping to ensure you don't lose, his best football has always been played in his own half. Sunderland need to win games now, to get to the holy grail of 40 points which should keep them up, they need 26 from just 18 games, almost 1.5 points per game. Draws won't keep Sunderland up.

That makes no sense at all. Perhaps what is should say, is that Bridcutt will not score you goals, but will help stop the opposition scoring. That's an important part of winning you a game.

If you stop the other teams scoring and retain the ball well you will win more than you draw

I understand what you are saying but you need to score and Sunderland have managed just 15 in 20 league games. Goals conceded, 33, is about par for the bottom teams. If they don't score more goals, they will go down.

We already have some pretty good youngsters. So it is not as if we are starting from scratch, as it were.

Agreed but the quality of talent we'll be able to attract with the new academy will dwarf what we're currently churning out.

but improving the defence can allow more players to attack with freedom

If they score none then you only need one.
