Boycott ESSO and BP

I have just received the following email:

"Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers.

It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...

Keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) .. and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (And not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE. It's easy to make this happen.

Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso."

i wouldn't anyway as they are the dearest 2. Shell seems to be the best at the mo by quite a way. Even Supermarkets are cheaper than the big 2.

You should really boycott all of the major fuel providers, and stick with the supermarkets rather than take two companies at random. The supermarkets tend to be cheaper anyway. The supermarkets will always try to keep their prices down, because they are always competing with each other.

To be honest, the government could quite happily step in and drop fuel duty as well until we invade Iran and take their fuel stocks.....

This is pointless, the author has absolutley no understanding of the international oil market. About as likely to succeed as Iain Dowie in a Beauty contest.

Why? The proof that the UK consumer will pay 91.9p per litre is already there for all to see. Therefore, if fuel duty falls, the price will simply be raised by the oil companies in the full knowledge that increase will be paid. And I'd rather my money went to taxes than to oil companies.

Hold on ...

I thought the reason Bush invaded IRAQ was to secure cheap oil supplies.

Did he get the WRONG COUNTRY?

Or was he only trying to ensure that the Oil Companies could put their prices up?

It's all very confusing.

Correct, which is why this email has been doing the rounds for about 10 years and has had no affect whatsoever.

If you don't like fuel prices, get off your fat arse and walk or cycle whereever possible.

Would be lovely except Exxon and BP are 2 completely seperate companies so you have to wonder where the mail originated.

They have no relation at all except they bopth plunder the worlds natural resources in pursuit of profit. If whoever wrote the mail can't be bothered to check that basic fact perhaps it's someone from another oil company?

Do you still beleive that the terrorist threat is a rightwing myth to controll people and strip away civil rights? Which you were on about a couple of months ago.

Amen to that. To be honest it pisses me off listening to people whinging about the price of petrol when most of them use their car 10 times more than they really need to.

I can understand the grievances of small businesses that rely on motor vehicles but a point has to come when people are priced out of driving cars except when essential. Wether that be via Fuel tax or Congestion charging.

If we continue the way we are going the environment will be totally knackered for future generations of this planet.

No you're wrong LB. It was to free the Iraqi people from oppression and rid the world of terrorist threats. A job well done.

As for this boycott campaign, total waste of time. Crude oil has risen 40% in price so far this year, an increase that has to be passed on to the consumer.
