I don't boo opposing anthems either!

I also do not understand why we have "God Save the Queen" against another British country!

Quite agree. It's such an embarrasslingly dire tune anyway. I expected it to be Land of Hope & Glory. I like the Welsh anthem and found myself joining in :lolol: (Well, I do have Welsh ancestry, so careful, Safeway;)

i have no problem with booing other teams national anthems. after all it only creates a volitile atmosphere and there is nothing wrong with a little intimmidation as long as it dont spill over into violence.
as for the english (british) anthem i agree with buzza, i cannot work out why we sing about the british monachy, especially whilst playing against another british team. i only wish i was english and not british as my passport tells me. the whole anthem just stinks of our arrogance. where as other british nations, their anthems have lots of pride and passion about their OWN country.

I don't think booing a national anthem is the way to intimidate the crowd or opposing players.

I think booing another country's national anthem is dis-respectful

They use it for the Commonwealth Games when an English Athlete wins a Gold so why don't the English FA use it in football?

God Save the Queen is the National Anthem of Great Britain.

England should use Jerusalem as an anthem.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded there
Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow (my bow) of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

England

in your opinion. i think we should support the team in every way possible apart from fighting so just to let them know they are not gonna get an easy ride why not boo them at every opportunity.
starting with their anthem. its only a laugh it does not mean we hate their country. it means we wanna win. we can respect them as a nation whilst talking to them in the pubs and bars before and after the match.

Do we (England FA) get fined for booing the oppositions nataional anthem. I seem to remember reading something recently.

Rather than booing, I think the england fans should just sign something else and drown out the anthem.

It does not boil down to respect, it is all about creating an intimidating atmosphere.

I wish people would stop slagging off our National Anthem. It is the best NA I've heard and makes my hair stand on end everytime I hear it, everybody should be proud of their National Anthem I know I am. But then going by some of the views I see on here I reckon some would rather be Nigerian or Saudi Arabian anyway.

:bowdown::bowdown:GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. :bowdown:

I don't agree with booing national anthems no matter who we are playing.

After all how can we moan when opposing fans do it to ours??

That's a joke right?:lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

God save the parasite is the best National Anthem you've heard? You clearly haven't heard many!

A National Anthem should be about the country, its peoples and pride in the Nation-not asking some deity to save a parasite and prolong her 'reign over us'. And apart from the content of god save the parasite being crap, the tune is THE dirgiest of all dirges. It is rubbish.

As for your comment about being Nigerian or Saudi-what the hell is that all about? In my eyes, the queen is not representative of me. She is head of a family that looks down their collective noses at the rest of us and their superiority complex filters down through the ranks of the other self-appointed snobs in this country. God save her? Not on my account please.

My starting point in this debate is an objection to the way national pride gets confused with national arrogance.

If we replaced GSTQ with Land of Hope and Glory, things would be even worse than they are now.

Land of Hope and Glory
Mother of the Free
How shall we extol thee
Who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider
Shall thy bounds be set
God, who made thee mighty
Make thee mightier yet...
God, who made thee mighty
Make thee mightier yet.

These sentiments obviously appeal to the relics of Britain's imperial past - hooray henries all - who make up the audience at the Last Night at the Proms. But they don't appeal to a huge proportion of the nation, who have moved on from pomp and circumstance. Even Elgar (who wrote the tune) hated the words that got added to it.

And what's "English" about LOH&G? It glorifies the BRITISH Empire.

We didn't boo 'God Save The Queen' yesterday in my local. That would have been petty and childish, and it would have meant that we'd have sunken to the level of the England fans who booed our anthem.

The manager of the pub went one better, and turned the TV volume off completely when 'GSTQ' came on. Our resident English friends weren't very happy about it though.

I don't understand why England fans feel compelled to boo another country's anthem. Apart from being disrespectful, it winds the opposition up. No other nation seems to do this.

Although I do not bother with the booing of anthems or singing Good Save the Queen, a number of nations boo our anthem. The one that sticks in the mind was the Scots in 1999 at Hampden, but to be honest I would expect anything else from them.

But I have been to fair few former eastern bloc places where they routinely jeer through our anthem.

Ive probably heard every national anthem there is, god knows Ive watched enough international matches and IMHO ours is the best. The comment about Nigerians etc. refers to the fact that some members on here seem to have such a strong opinion that we shouldnt say a bad word about such countries that I think sometimes that they would sooner be from there than from England.
Sorry if you disagree but if your not roused and feel proud when you hear GSTQ then you dont deserve to br English.

Just my opinion.

If your go down that road, then surely it would just be better to have 2 minutes or so of booing before the game to "intimidate" each opposition. Perhaps im old fashioned, and think that you should respect other country's national anthems
