Blatter wants smaller Premiership

Fifa wants Premiership cut

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has held informal talks which could see the Premiership reduced to 18 teams and FA Cup replays being scrapped.
Blatter would ideally like to see domestic leagues down to 16 clubs.

"You have an FA Cup and League Cup and still the old tradition of replays in the FA Cup," said Blatter.

"This was mentioned in a meeting with the Football Association and Premier League. If there were no cup replays you can have 18 teams."

He added: "We want to make sure there are not too many dates for national competitions.

"We should have between 43 and 47 dates for domestic football. Players should not play more than 60 games a year."

What the f*** has it got to do with him? Ah, yes - there's the clue: "We want to make sure there are not too many dates for national competitions". Sod club football, it doesn't matter, except when it is at European or world level.

Twat.

I have always considered that in the future the elitist clubs would attempt to maintain their superior position by insisting clubs could only join the Premier League of their stadium capacity was above say 25,000 thereby preventing the smaller clubs (and ones that have difficulty getting Planning Permission) from disturbing their exclusive club ???

I do not want to put ideas in their head. And will not happen for a few years yet as many of the clubs do not have a 25,000 capacity right now.

If this does happen and it will be gay if it does, how do they decide who stays and who goes???

Do we say for example stay in the prem and u in div 1 if you get promoted???

Plus, he is a bent, corrupt (sorry about the tautology) power monger who cheated and conned his way back into the FIFA presidency at the last round of elections. The FA thinks he is a ****, and were demanding (a) his removal and (b) an investigation into his affairs. Needless to say, FIFA (alright Blatter) rebuffed those calls. He has quite a strong relation with UEFA, however.

It's because of Blatter that the World Cup was not given to Africa for 2006. Yes, we know the story of the Oceania representative, but it was strongly rumoured that Blatter was behind the pressure exertion.

The fat f***.

This would bring all European lagues into line with the Bundesliga.
Perhaps there is an element of self interest in this proposal.

Sorry to be pedantic but Sepp Blatter is Swiss not German.

He's still an interfering, annoying arsehole though.

On NSC for over two decades...
This guy badly needs to retire.

He has not a clue about the English game (quite frankly the FA should be dictating the rules of the game to FIFA, not the other way round).

No replays? Does the guy not understand how important to the "lucrative" replay is to the smaller club. And what a great spectacle they are.

Smaller Premier League? Like the lazy bastards play a lot of games in the first place!!! And the ones in European competition generally have two teams+ worth of internationals anyway, so whats the problem?

I think eventually the top teams will break completely with the rest of football and form a league with no relegation because it harms their profits (and the shareholders) too much if they go down. Probably a league of maybe 16 top (i.e. rich) European sides that will suck all the talent from everywhere else and completely ignore grassroots football. It'll be a sad day, but I think that is where a lot of the top teams would like to go.

a galaxy far far away
The reason Blatter wants a smaller permiership is because he's under pressure from the games real powerbrokers, David Dein, Peter Kenyon and whoever the Man U exec is these days to cut out fixtures which don't make them as much money, ie v Leicester Wolves etc.

The number of games argument is bollocks, Man U wouldn't constantly be playing lucrative friendlies in the USA, far east etc if there was any truth in this.

Blatter, like the weak twat he is, blindly follows this argument. This is something which aims to increase the polarization between the big 3 and the rest of the football league. It should be resisted.

There's a great article in this months When saturday comes magazine about Blatter's tenure. Apparently he's due to step down in 2010. So a bit of a wait, but one of the favorites to take the post is Michel Platini. This would be great news. If anyone has heard his views on the way the game is going, they will know he is passionate and committed to reducing the disparity between the big clubs and the rest. Kind of like a football socialist.

His appointment would be fiercely resisted by th g14 clubs. Anyway that should be the Northstand chat campaign for 2010. In 6 years time we'll probably be hankering to do a bit of campaigning, just like in the good old days!
