I'll miss Big Ron. He was far more interesting than the usual bland commentry teams (Barry Davies and Mark Bright anyone ? f***ing hell...) Ron was a genuine football enthusiast in an endearing kind of way. He's like your mad uncle sitting in the corner making mental comments on the game. But work your way around his "Ronnisms" and he was actually a pretty shrewd commentator who clearly knows what he is talking about - even if it came across in an amusing kind of way.

ITV Sport will be the poorer without him. Ron Atkinson was worth 10 Andy Townsends, and don't even get me started on Ally f***ing McCoist. Come on ITV, he clearly regrets his comments. Lets just have a full apology and get him back in the box next to Clive.

For christs sake, this P C bollocks is getting so out of hand its ridiculous.

I know Ron cheesed me off Big Time in the '83 Cup final.

When interviewed before the game, the Man U manager said "it's all United fans here! Have the Brighton fans turned up?" (or words to that affect).

The TV presenter replied "Er, no Ron, they are already in the ground!"

It was an inappropriate slip by Ron, and ITV are right to pick him up on it. But we've all said things out of turn before. The fact remains, he's been highly professional over many, many years in the ITV commentry box, and while his comments WERE out of order, it seems to me that people are falling over themselves not to offend anyone nowadays, and are constantly walking on eggshells for fear of upsetting someone.

f*** C*NT ****** BOLLOCKS YID TOSS JAP CHINK

There, a whole sentence of offensive words and terms. Is anyone going to keel over in shock ? Have I just contributed to a fundemental breakdown in society, or incited an outbreak of racial hatred ? You tell me. I guess I'll know if I am suddenly banned from NSC.

I am afraid that people should fall over themselves not to offend. It is a courtesy.

The problem is that if he uses those words in an unguarded moment it suggests to me that is how he thinks.

I think you are a poorer person for having written that whole sentence of offensive words. I don't know you so it hasn't changed my view of you, but if I wrote them or expressed them I woudn't feel good about myself. I'd prefer not to have read them to be honest.

I was just starting to warm to Big Ron aswell. Used to find him irritating with all his stupid comments. And had an obvious dislike for his Man U connections.
However having seen him on a couple of other things of late (Room 101 and Question of Sport) He actually comes over as a fairly decent and knowledgable chap.
In his position though you can't go making remarks like he did. The apology was obviously needed, but he was never gonna keep his job.

As well as the 'Three Degrees' comment in his WBA days he also said about Villa on the occasion when they had four black defenders: "We're playing our flat black four today!" Not in itself a racist comment of course, just an observation but indicative of the fact that he was obssessed by the color of a player's skin.

Anyone else see the story on News at Ten last night? Some of the footage showed the legend that is Jimmy Melia with Big Ron at the '83 cup final and Albion players on the joint lap of honour with the Man U players. Ah the memories!.

If he says that off air in the studio, then what does he say amongst his mates in the pub etc??

????

I'm as anti-PC brigade as the next man but calling someone a "f***ing lazy ******" is racist, end of story.

I don't believe that one comment makes him 'Bigot Ron' (copyright The Sun) but nevertheless it was a very offensive thing to say, off air or not.

I'm sure an full apology will be forthcoming and Ron will get over this, but on this occasion his resignation was the only way.

I was thinking that. ITV's apology makes play of the fact that Big Ron thought they were off-air, the implication being is that the comment would have been all right in private.

Now that does concern me.

Ron is probably the most outdated summariser on TV. Old Hackneyed phrases like "early doors" and "to be fair" were mentioned during the Chelsea game. The term "******" has not been in use since the 70's and just sums him up really.

"TV pundit Ron Atkinson sacked for racist remark

Ian Prior
Thursday April 22, 2004
The Guardian <http://www.guardian.co.uk>

Ron Atkinson, the ITV football pundit, yesterday resigned after racist comments about the Chelsea player Marcel Desailly were broadcast around the world.
The remarks, made when viewers in Britain were watching post-match analysis of the Monaco v Chelsea Champions League semi-final first leg match, were broadcast in several places in the Middle East, including Dubai and Egypt.
Referring to the underwhelming performance of the French defender, Atkinson said: "He's what is known in some schools as a f***ing lazy thick ******." Atkinson's conversation was picked up by microphones that should have been switched off once the broadcast from the stadium had concluded."

Back to the whole PC thing again. I was set upon by a couple of Asian guys at QPR and was called a gay etc. Now I was politically correct and wasn't racist. Yet the old homophobic chants were being hurled and the two guys seem to think that is totally acceptable.

To set the story straight I'm not gay and ended up fronting them and they ran off like a couple of cowards.

I just don't seem to have a huge simpify for all this "be PC" talk.

Back to Ron I think he's done the right thing and walked, however he'll return.

Agree with that 100%. Everytime somebody whether it be a sportsman or an MP makes a racist jibe and the media picks up on it, we get the same weak excuse churned out. It was a moment of temporary madness, I'm not really racist etc.....I don't buy it, I'm afraid. I wonder how some of the apologists for Atkinson really think?? Good ridance to the bigot.
